Trident applies for Moncks Corner hospital

August 25, 2008; Charleston, SC: Trident Health System announced today the certificate of need (CON) application for construction of a new hospital in Berkeley County was filed August 13 with the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The facility will be a three story 50-bed hospital located on property adjacent to the current Moncks Corner Medical Center, which Trident Health System currently operates as a freestanding emergency room and outpatient diagnostics facility, at 401 North Live Oak Drive in Moncks Corner.

Moncks Corner Mayor Bill Peagler recently commented, “I’m so proud of Trident Health System for showing this level of commitment.

A full-service hospital in Berkeley County means an awful lot to our residents; it not only increases the quality of healthcare in our community, but also enhances the quality of life for our citizens, who won’t have to travel long distances for the care they need. A new hospital also equates to more job opportunities. I applaud Trident Health System for this investment in Moncks Corner and Berkeley County,” said Peagler.

The $115 million dollar project is expected to yield 120 additional jobs at the new hospital with an estimated annual payroll of approximately ten million dollars. In addition, construction of the facility is expected to provide over 200 jobs during the construction phase.

The new hospital will provide general acute care hospital services. Inpatient services will include medical/surgical, obstetrics and intensive care beds, as well as the appropriate supporting ancillary departments.

The hospital will also include an emergency department and comprehensive outpatient services such as medical imaging, laboratory testing and physical therapy. In addition, physician office space will be located on the property.

After hearing of Trident’s intent to build a hospital in Berkeley County, Dan Davis, Berkeley County Supervisor, commented, “I am really happy to hear that Trident Health System plans to further invest in Berkeley County and provide quality health care close to the homes of our citizens,” said Davis.

“Because of Moncks Corner Medical Center, Berkeley County has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Trident Health System. This is a wonderful announcement for Berkeley County’s future,” Davis concluded.

“We are excited about bringing a new hospital to Berkeley County and we wish to thank all of the physicians, business and community leaders and residents for their overwhelming support of this project,” said Jim Rardin, vice president of development, Trident Health System.
