Local Hospital Awards Five $1,000 Scholarships to Lowcountry Students

June 30, 2010; Summerville, SC: Summerville Medical Center recently awarded five $1,000 Summerville Medical Center/Berlin G. Meyers Scholarships to local high school seniors and college students who have permanent residence in Dorchester, Berkeley and Charleston counties. The scholarships were awarded to the following students who will be enrolling or have already declared their major in a medical related profession:

    •        Kaylie Michelle Fehr, Clemson University’s School of Nursing
    •        Juliann Dayle Giberson, Charleston Southern University
    •        Stephanie Michelle Grosso, Medical University of South Carolina School of Nursing
    •        Michael Artison Laferte, Trident Technical College
    •        Ellen Marie Walker, Medical University of South Carolina?

Summerville Medical Center received over 25 applications for the 2010 scholarship; the scholarship will be used to pay for tuition, books, supplies or housing. ?

Kaylie Michelle Fehr

  1. Bishop England High School
  2. Accepted to both Clemson University and University of South Carolina and plans to attend Clemson University’s Nursing School in the fall
  3. Goal is to become a Nurse
  4. Personal quote: “I have compassion for those who have less than I do, and I hope that this quality serves me well in a nursing career.”

Juliann Dayle Giberson
  1. Academic Magnet High School
  2. Plans to attend Charleston Southern University
  3. Goal is to become a Nurse in a nursing home or in hospice care\
  4. Personal Quote: “I believe I can make a difference to those people whom I am around and I can learn from every experience.”

Stephanie Michelle Grosso
  1. Graduate from Berkeley High School and  attended Charleston Southern University College of Nursing until her transfer to MUSC College of Nursing
  2. Currently attends the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing
  3. Goal to be Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist from program at MUSC after completing her BSN degree
  4. Personal Quote on future: “My future plan is to become a CRNA, continue on as a nurse educator, and one day establish a college of nursing of my own.  I would like to build a nursing college at an existing university in South Carolina to provide the support I will need to create a positive learning atmosphere.”

  3. Goal is to become a paramedic and then continuing his education at Frances Marion University to study Graphic Design
  4. Great personal accomplishment is earning being part of Boys Scouts with the intent to become an Eagle Scout

Ellen Marie Walker
  1. Summerville High School and Winthrop University Graduate
  2. Currently attends the Medical University of South Carolina and is studying to earn a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy
  3. Goal is to be an Occupational Therapist in an inpatient rehabilitation or acute hospital
  4. Was previously awarded “Therapy Aide of the Year” in 2008-2009 at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital
  5. Personal Quote: “When I become an Occupational Therapist I plan to strive to help individuals who are suffering from a medical condition or have had some type of traumatic injury in order to regain their skills and abilities to independently take care of themselves and complete their activities of daily living.”
