South Carolina Students to Watch Live Surgery
Dec. 10, 2009; Charleston, SC: Science class is taking on a new twist for some South Carolina high school students. Students from 16 high schools will have the chance to get a front row seat to surgery next week at a Trident Medical Center operating room.
On Dec. 17, the Virtual Surgery Insider (VSI) will take about 500 students inside the operating room to a real-world, real time total hysterectomy surgery, via da Vinci robot through a live broadcast. This project is a partnership with the South Carolina Department of Education’s Office of Career and Technology Education, the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) and Trident Health System.
“It is an amazing program,” said Rachel Branham, Assistant Director of Workforce Education and Recruitment at the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA). “Students are in classrooms around the state and are able to view a total hysterectomy while the OB/GYN, Dr. James Martin, narrates the procedure live from the operating room. During the procedure students can participate in an interactive discussion with Dr. Martin and members of the surgical team.”
The project, created by SCHA connects the operating room at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston to 16 schools in Berkley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. The students were selected from health science classes at each school.
“The program captures the attention of today’s students,” said Todd Gallati, President and CEO at Trident Health System. “It portrays one of the more exciting facets of health care – the operating room. Students not only learn about one of the many surgical procedures performed at Trident, but they get to see the role that advanced technology and all of our staff play in the operating room. “
