Charleston, S.C./ Aug. 27, 2010 – Over the last 10 years, new technology has made kidney removal an easier process.  Dr. Theodore Brisson, a urologist on staff at Trident Health System, has now taken the progress one step further using Single Port Robotic Nephrectomy.  He recently completed the Lowcountry’s first ever robotic surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System to remove a cancerous kidney.

Instead of making five incisions to remove the kidney, the robotic process makes just one incision below the belly button.  The 90 minute procedure gives patients a faster recovery time combined with less pain, blood loss, scarring and risk of infection.  Dr. Brisson also points out one major advantage.  “Cosmetically it’s much better for younger patients.”

Dr. Brisson is the first surgeon in South Carolina to perform this procedure.  “Trident Health System has become the center of excellence for robotic surgery.  This is a further extension of minimally invasive surgery.”
