Trident Health System’s Diabetes Education Program Merits ADA Recognition
October 12, 2009; Charleston, SC: The Trident Health System diabetes self-management program has been awarded recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
The ADA Education Recognition effort is a voluntary process which assures that approved education programs have met the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management for participants.
“The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of the services they provide,” said DeBorah McCollum, RN, BSN, CDE, program coordinator for diabetes education at Trident Health System. “In addition, it helps consumers to identify these quality programs which are an essential component of diabetes treatment.”
According to the ADA, there are 23.6 million children and adults in the United States, or 7.8% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 5.7 million people (or nearly one quarter) are unaware that they have the disease.
