Dear Editor,
This election was a very historic election. Long lines and damp weather did not stop our voters from coming out and casting their ballots. Dorchester County saw a voter turnout of 71.52%. Over 6,000 ballots were cast in our Absentee precinct alone. This sort of turnout was similar across South Carolina. During these major elections this office relies on volunteers to make sure that voters are able to cast their ballots on Election Day. These people perform a very thankless job. Poll Workers are required to attend training prior to each election and are required to work a 12-14 hour day. Dorchester County is lucky to have these folks volunteer their time and service to its citizens. This office wishes to give you our heartfelt gratitude after a job well done.
Joseph L. Debney
Executive Director
Dorchester County Elections and Voter Registration

While I do agree that more machines would be a good idea, I also know that it wouldn't bring more people to the polls. More machines would only solve long lines (somewhat). I don't know about you, but I didn't sit at home and say to myself: "I don't think they'll be enough machines, so I won't go vote". Although I don't know how many people may have left the lines because of the wait, I do know it probably wasn't many. For those who did leave and complain about the long lines...you were warned! It was all over the news about how the absentee voting was HUGE and the wait there was a long time. They warned that the wait on Election day would most likely be even longer!

Don't you agree that in a state where an average 75% shows up to vote we in this erudite community could do better than a paltry 71% which by the way is lower than most counties? Whats your solution? I say better funtioning machines.

Bruster, You, like so many others, should really take a step back and thank those who sacrificed so much for this election. I feel the Election Commission staff worked extremely hard and did an excellent job. I know they must have put in very long hours for little appreciation and I thank them for that. As for the machines, it isn't the Commission's fault they were lacking machines and were unable to provide more machines to each location (and backups for failed machines). If you have a problem, talk to your legislator. They are the one's who keep shooting down the Election Commission's re-precincting plans which would allow for smaller precincts and shorter lines. Do you think the Commission has anything to gain by making the lines longer? The answer, my friend, is no. As a matter of fact, they probably have just as much to lose by doing so. I am sure they are doing everything in their power to get more machines and work on making the next election better for everybody. I don't know anyone of you personally, but I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Great job, and keep up the good work! Remember, Bruster, it isn't your RIGHT to vote. It is a PRIVILEGE you get to stand in that line and cast your ballot. God Bless.

71% isn't good enough? Maybe if the other parties would have been bussing them in like the Democrats were doing, there would be a much higher turnout.

71% participation is an improvment, however, this is lagging behind the state average of 75%. If the election commission would insist on better voting opportunities (machines that work 100%?) maybe the long lines would decrease and our participation would increase.
