I am writing in response to a letter to the editor that appeared in your paper relative to Mr. Joe Pye, Dorchester 2 Superintendent’s salary. Mr. Pye is the chief executive of the largest employer in Dorchester County: Dorchester District 2 Schools. He has over 43 years experience in public education and possesses three college degrees, two of them advanced. He has worked his way through the ranks and has tremendous credibility because of his vast experience and “hands on approach.” Recently he was recognized as South Carolina State Superintendent of the Year.
If Mr. Pye had the same responsibilities in the private sector, his salary would be triple what he is being paid in DD2. Dorchester 2 is very fortunate to have someone of Mr. Pye’s experience passion and dedication. If he chose to do so I am sure Mr. Pye is a short phone call away from numerous opportunities to lead other school districts. Yet he remains loyal to our students, teachers, administrators, families and the Summerville community.
What Mr. Pye has developed in our community is a first class school system that consistently attracts families to our area.
Because of his leadership and tremendous work ethic our children receive a first class education and the entire community benefits from a better quality of life.
If the executives in the business world had to meet the same accountability standards as Joe Pye, most would be unemployed tomorrow. Mr. Pye deals with our nation’s most precious resource – our children.
I encourage anyone who thinks Joe Pye is over paid to shadow him for a day and then go see their cardiologist.
