Summerville Journal Scene ®
Dear Editor,
I picked up The Journal Scene last evening after driving home from Charleston up Hwy. 61, as I always do. I read the letter written by Ms. Moss, referring to the intersection known as Cook's Crossroad as " perfectly functional."
I would never have used that as a description, and I've lived here all of my life. That crossroad has always been dangerous even before there were schools and subdivisions in the area.
By the time I go through the intersection at Hwy. 61 and 165, the police officer is no longer there as it is after school hours. It has been my observation while trying to travel through that intersection that people either do not know the rules for how to treat an all way stop or don't care. Check your driver’s handbook. It says you must come to a full STOP. Then the vehicle has the right of way in order that they arrived, If they've arrived at approximately the same time, then the person to your right or a counter clockwise rotation is the rule.
Even at 6 or 7 p.m., it seems there is always someone who thinks it's okay to just shoot through that stop just because all the other cars have stopped.
I'm sorry that traffic being backed up is a problem for some people trying to get to their early destinations, but among those people are our children trying to get to school as well.
There have been many accidents and some fatalities at that crossroad over the years. I would suggest that the decision to place a traffic officer there was not just because of Legend Oaks residents but the safety of the community. If you're running late for work or school, try leaving a little earlier. It's better than a ride in an ambulance or the back of a hearse.
Sincerely,
Darleen Dukes
