Government and public health issues
Published Tuesday, January 04, 2011 5:11 PM
Summerville Journal Scene ®

Dear Editor,

A business has the right to operate as they wish

along with the responsibility to provide a safe environment for their

employees and their customers.

Endangering the public health is not an option. Government policies exist to protect the public from potential health hazards. Fire codes, food service policies, building codes, and

secondhand smoke policies are all examples of appropriate business

regulations to protect public health.

Government intervention is often necessary to protect the public. It has been almost five years now since the Surgeon General's Report on Secondhand Smoke and all businesses are still not smoke free. How long will businesses operate as they wish and not be responsible?

How long will it take to voluntarily adopt public health policy or implement government policy to prevent needless exposure to secondhand smoke's toxic chemicals?
