Immigration discussion

Dear Editor,

Victoria Middleton's letter was an excellent summary of the inherent dangers of the proposed immigration ordinance.  She rightly warns of serious difficulties for landlords, employers, and law enforcement.  The ordinance would also discourage new businesses from coming to Summerville, and build a wall of distrust and fear between ethnicities.  Could the Town Council's proposal be the vehicle by which our beautiful town experiences the turmoil that Governor Brewer brought to the people of Arizona?  I have jokingly commented to my dark-haired, dark-eyed children that if we lived in Arizona they would have to avoid traffic violations at all costs.  The prospect of enduring suspicious scrutiny at every turn in Summerville, simply because of possessing Hispanic features, is truly alarming.  I am, after all, half Mexican.  My mother was a legal immigrant who proudly became an American citizen.  She was passionately patriotic toward her adopted country, which she saw as the sole beacon of justice and liberty in the world.  I am not opposed to bringing illegal immigrants to justice, but there is already a law on the books to address this infraction.  The Town Council's proposal would unnecessarily open the door to a loss of the American liberty that my Mexican-American mother taught me to cherish.
