Dear Ms. Watts,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Town Council and the Town Administration for responding to a plea from Summerville D.R.E.A.M. (Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management) and the merchants and restaurants of Downtown Summerville.
Recently, one of our board members, Diane Frankenberger and I invited councilman Ricky Waring and Parks and Recreation Director Mike Hinson to take a walk through our downtown so that we could discuss the challenges that pedestrians face in getting around town to visit the different areas where businesses are located.
While it is certainly South Carolina law that drivers must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks, it has not been in practice in the downtown area. Having difficulty crossing the streets makes visitors and locals less motivated to use the free downtown parking garage as well visiting businesses in different parts of the downtown. We have heard repeated comments from business owners and local residents about this problem and have experienced the peril ourselves as we move throughout the downtown.
Mr. Waring and Mr. Hinson advised us to take our suggestions to the Public Works committee and so we approached the committee with our interest in making the town more pedestrian-friendly with crosswalk signs to slow drivers down.
In just a few short weeks we have seen visible evidence that they responded to our concerns with the newly-installed crosswalk signs on Main Street, Doty Avenue and West Richardson Avenue. We are very grateful to the quick response of our Town Council and Town Administration in taking this action to make all of downtown more accessible to our residents and visitors. Now as drivers, we all have the responsibility to heed these crosswalk signs and make Summerville a town friendly to all modes of transportation.
Thank you again for your response to our requests and we are so pleased to work in partnership with the Town government to make Summerville a better place to live and visit!
Susan Morris
Executive Director, Summerville D.R.E.A.M.
