Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Please, someone enlighten me. When I went to school -- no snickering and cracks about dinosaurs -- we learned to read, we learned arithmetic, even fractions, with the teacher putting the problems on the chalkboard, we learned social studies, writing (cursive), music and a host of other things that prepared us for the higher grades -- and some of us graduate and post graduate studies.

Now, can you believe this?  It was all done WITHOUT a backpack and a collection of pencils, colored crayons, rulers, notebook paper and whatever else is now required for the parents to buy and stuff in the backpack. And also, I would not hesitate to compare academic grades and graduation stats with many of the schools today.

Please explain why the colored crayons, etc. are necessary for the child’s education in 2010?
