Plan growth as a team
Published Tuesday, June 09, 2009 1:56 PM
Summerville Journal Scene ®

Dear Editor,

There is a sign at a pond in a sub division in Dorchester Country. It says “Please Do Not Feed the Geese” The reason is simple – more geese come.

Because we have welcomed more citizens in Dorchester County in the past, more and more continue to come. When is enough, enough? How much sprawl can we tolerate?  Why do they come? There is more than one reason: location, location, location; sense of community, sense of belonging. Dorchester County offers these things that make a home a home, urban and rural. In addition, we are close to Charleston, places of higher learning, fine dining, museums, the waterways, most importantly for many, jobs. Because of our good fortune in Dorchester County we must plan where our growth will be and where it is needed.

What repercussions occur when “more” come? Shortages in medical facilities, affordable housing, classrooms, support services, etc. arise. We see increases in traffic congestion, pollution, sprawl, taxes and impact fees.

Around 1765, Summerville began as Pineland Village and was a part of Charleston, Berkeley and Colleton Counties. In 1897 Dorchester County was formed.

In 1899 The World Congress of Medical Specialists in the field of respiratory disease gathered in Paris. The group known as the “Tuberculosis Congress” named Summerville as one of two best areas in the world for the treatment and recovery of lung disorders. Their findings were widely publicized and a golden era began for the lower part of Dorchester County.

The golden era continues today. In fact, if it were not for the current recession, the constant noise of back hoes, bang of hammers, and shortage of all kinds of building supplies would be ever present, and growth would be extended further inland.

We need Smart/Planned Growth now!

During this economic slowdown, the Democratic Party urges all of us to “Make lemonade out of the lemons we have been given.” Let’s remedy together some of the growth problems we have. We the people elect government. Let our citizens, government, and developers work together in a partnership to resolve these issues and the outcome will be Smart/Planned Growth for all of us to enjoy.

Hopeful but Skeptical

When builders bankroll and fight tooth and nail to get the most vocal sensible planning guy off of town councilin a very personal and nasty race, and fight impact fees for schools, the only logical conclusion is that they don't want too many restrictions on their activities.Pro-planning people have been unfairly tarred as "no growth" and even blamed for everything from the downturn in the economy to poor spending decisions. Please don't complain to me about overcrowded schools and heavy traffic- call Ryan Castle, the mouthpiece for the realtors and builders. We have opportunities to plan and work together. Builders have wanted no part of it.But realize it's still a deadlocked council with the mayor breaking a tie. If you ever want to see anything positive happen, you're going to have to work with sensible planning people. The issue did not die with the last election. In fact, we're more resolute than ever. And Steve, please start with Aaron Brown. He's not a friend to smart growth.

Interesting Comments from Interesting People
Saturday, July 04, 2009 11:04 AM

In reading the mostly negative comments to Marty's recent post, it would appear there are a number of misunderstandings within our community. One I would like to address is the mistaken idea that being a builder and being for "smart growth" - which for the last 8 years has been mandated by State law in the form of each County and Municipalities' Comprehensive Development Plan - is mutually exclusive. Anyone who really has been following this topic locally knows this is not true, and to automatically assume otherwise is infantile. Simply being a residential home builder is not a bad thing (I am proud to be one), and neither is wanting to see planned growth in our community. Without this, we end up looking like Goose Creek, North Charleston, or any of a number of other areas that are a mish-mash of homes/busineses with little to no infrastructure support. The Dorchester County ordinance recently passed that requires an infrastructure fee to be paid by the builder for each home constructed is a great start. The lack of well planned infrastructure and development isn't good for residents, investors in cour community, businesses, or anyone else. In reality, especially on this 4th of July holiday, let's remember that this is EVERYONE's community - Democrat and Republican alike. We need to work together to make it the best it can be! As someone who grew up here, it is important to me that Summerville and the surrounding area retain its instinctive small-town charm and friendliness. I don't know a real American who would suggest otherwise. And this IS the official line of the Democratic Party. For anyone who disagrees with this, don't lob word bombs here. Get your voice truly heard and get involved! I'll see you at the next Summerville Town Council meeting!

Adressing the Rodent Problem
Monday, June 22, 2009 6:54 AM

Ms. Turney what's with all these animal illusions...first geese and now dogs. I see it more like lemmings to be honest. You were a lemming when you came to the south and more lemmings are coming. Now that you found your "piece of the peace", you don't want any more lemmings. For the democrats to take that position is VERY surprising since most of the "outlanders" coming are northern Catholic (or Jewish) Democrats from NY or New Jersey or the mid-west. They are watering down the solid Republican/Heterosexual/Baptist/Christian South and bringing radical ideas like civil rights for all people, seperation of Church and State, reforming healthcare...you know those dangerous PROGRESSIVE ideals. So it's not geese, it's more a rodent problem in my opinion.

Pleasse Ms. Turney don't come down here from New York, New Jersey or Ohio and tell us dumb southerners what to do! Where are you from? Are you too a geese? goose? whatever?

Planned Growth
Friday, June 19, 2009 8:26 PM

For all of those negative comments I say again "Let’s remedy together some of the growth problems we have. We the people elect government. Let our citizens, government, and developers work together in a partnership to resolve these issues and the outcome will be Smart/Planned Growth for all of us to enjoy." Note, there is no mention of Democratic citizens, this letter refers to ALL citizens of our area, be you Democrat, Republican, Independent, or a never bother to vote citizen. Get involved-Remember in a dog race, the view in front of you remains the same unless you're in the lead!

And YOU know the difference in sensible, planned growth and being anti-growth. The Democratic Party is not Pro-Developer, except for the chairman who works for a builder and Aaron Brown who smells $$ for his Mayor's race.

There is a sign at a pond in a sub division in Dorchester Country. It says “Please Do Not Feed the Geese” The reason is simple – more geese come. Ms. Turney writes: Because we have welcomed more citizens in Dorchester County in the past, more and more continue to come. When is enough, enough? How much sprawl can we tolerate? Response and question: Maybe we have too many democratic geese? Are you one that came and now advocating shutting others out? If we don't grow we die as a community.I guess the official democratic line is keep those "others" out.

The democrat party is against Progress?
Friday, June 12, 2009 12:36 PM

Does Ms. Turney speak for the Democrat Party? Her smart gtrowtyh is an anti-growth program. I guess the Democrat Party is willing to go back to the past. Is this the change they stand for? Anti-progress?

Better late than...

The only problem with this wonderful idea is-- the developers made it abundantly clear they don't want to discuss anything or compromise, and they put up the money to get their job done.Gee, Marty- Where was the Democratic party's voice in the recent election when it could have had more impact, other than only pushing Aaron Brown who was unopposed and who has voted on the wrong end of planned growth debate? Maybe the party would serve the planned growth movement best by convincing Mr Brown of the error of his ways. At this late point, that's the best place to start.
