Rep. Young Leader in Reform Efforts
Published Tuesday, June 16, 2009 3:22 PM
Summerville Journal Scene ®

Dear Editor:

Since gaining the majority in the South Carolina House of Representatives, Republicans have fought hard to protect your tax dollars and pass much needed government reforms.  We have held government growth to less than 2.8% a year and have returned over $15.4 billion to our hard working citizens through tax cuts.

Many of these accomplishments would not have been possible without the hard work of Rep. Annette Young.

Annette is one of the hardest working, conservative members in the House.  As a former Majority Leader and as a ranking member on the House Ways & Means Committee, many of the recent government reforms that have became law did so in large part because of Mrs. Young’s leadership.

Workers’ Compensation Reform, Tort Reform, DUI Reform, Department of Transportation Reform and Illegal Immigration Reform were all close votes that Rep. Young helped secure.

Much has been said – and much has been misunderstood – about the Employment Security Commission (ESC) bill the House took up this year.

The bill restructured the ESC into a cabinet level agency that would be placed under the Governor’s control.  Although some have tried to tie this reform bill to our state’s growing deficit in our unemployment fund, the bill did not propose to provide a solution to the deficit.  The only way to lower the deficit is to address our state’s third worst unemployment rate and reduce the growing number of unemployed people receiving benefits.

Restructuring the ESC is an important issue that must be addressed and that is why I supported it this year.  However, I do understand the concerns many had about this issue.  With the recent 100% increase in the number of unemployed people in our state, our current system is clearly broken.

That is why a legislative audit was ordered for the ESC – this is the same type of audit that led to the sweeping reforms at the Department of Transportation.  Rep. Young said from the floor of the House that she wanted to first see the problems highlighted in the audit and then vote for the reforms it suggests.  This, she said, would ensure that we were implementing the proper reforms.

This issue isn’t personal; it isn’t political.  This issue is about fixing our growing unemployment problem that for far too long has gone unaddressed.

Mrs. Young was standing up for the citizens she represents when she fought to fix our broken economic development efforts.  Anyone who suggests otherwise clearly has not reviewed Mrs. Young’s long record as a reformer in the House.

Bobby Harrell

Speaker of the S.C. House of Representatives

Strange, strange silence from Annette on the Governor's escapades. Where are you, Annette? The SJS has given you a pass.

Reform can only come with a change in representation....across the board.

if Young *really was* such a great gal
Tuesday, July 07, 2009 5:46 PM

then she wouldn't have to spend so much time hitting up so many pals to write so many cheesy letters on her behalf. If she was doing such a great job, we'd know that on our own, and not have to read the fluff in all these letters she keeps asking folks to write.

Cemetery Constituents

Are they moving them into another precinct or will they continue to vote in Annette's district? One thing about them- they don't complain nearly as much.

Ryan Castle, Larry Hargett, or Annette Young, again & again & again... Dorchester Rd district, I think it's House seat 98, it needs some new blood. I think they are going to move part of a cemetery to widen Dorchester Rd. Do you think they can dig up somebody new??

Annette Young has been telling everbody Jamie Feltner is running against her. I don't think that's true but she must be scared, to be campaigning this early.

Young takes them down one at a time with her car and hundreds at a time by supporting home builders. Maybe she fell out of a tree when she was much, much younger.

Grade A Pork

Spare me the "bait and switch" with the Governor. Young is Young and Sanford is Sanford. Both have their faults. One feels like he is doing the right thing, the other is doing the right right thing for herself. In fact most of what she has done her whole political career has been unethical. From exits out of police station back doors after car crashes to back door meetings called Beatygate about who makes laws in SC (a colorful history if you have followed it). If you want 4 more years of "back door" politics, then by all means, keep her around. At least you know what you got.

Ryan Castle for State House Representative. Here is your chance Ryan. You have all the answers and you live in her district. Grow a pair and put your name on the ballot or support Larry Hargett and help him get elected.

Annette Young deserves an "A" grade
Saturday, June 20, 2009 12:04 PM

Annette Young was conservative when she first ran for the house and remains a staunch conservative. The above letter reflects on her reform movement including tort reform which was badly needed when passed several years ago. The letter also points out the need to stop the unemployment bleeding in this state, now over 12% statewide and over 10% in Dorchester County. If you want to fix this problem, ask Governor Sanford why he stripped the dept. of Commerce of all its funding for the past 6 years. This is the arm of the Executive branch totally under his control. Ms. Young is our best asset in Columbia. The Governor shows totally poor leadership in commerce, the area where we need help the most help. Ms. Young and the house have always funded economic development while the governor cuts the money from the one area where we most need it.

Pull eezzee - Reform
Friday, June 19, 2009 4:03 PM

What does Harrell know about reform? The promises were made - Transparency. Tax reform. Spending caps. Government restructuring. Election reform. Bobby gave us only transparency in the past 6 months and only enough to make campaign speeches with; Tax reform enough to shut down schools; Competitive Grants out of control on Ballon festivals and green bean museums: Restructuring the power away from the Governor and into the Legislature. And Annette was along for the ride do just the biding the Speaker needed her to o and ignoring the needs of her constituents. Time for Annette to go back into Real Estate.

OUr Best Voice
Friday, June 19, 2009 3:52 PM

Dang if Young is our best voice, Dorchester County has a bad case of laryngitis! Read the words and look at the votes before you call her record Conservative. It quite apparent you simply believe what she tells you and I have on very good account that is a dangerous thing to do! And I guess I either don't know the definition of "vindictive" or your are reading another post as CR's post was anything but vindictive which means "having or showing a strong or unreasoning desire for revenge"

Self serving comes back, Annette Done
Friday, June 19, 2009 12:37 PM

Well she did swoop into action when she thought her home value might go down. I wish we could all have the power to use/abuse when our self interests were in jeopardy. And before Rhino Hunter runs in with his delusional thoughts, I am a conservative Republican (who is ready for a change) and Where was she with this bill when other neighborhoods were being forced zoned (ie...Kings Grant...Watson Hill). Face it, it didn't effect her property value.

Say goodbye, Annette
Friday, June 19, 2009 10:00 AM

Annette is powerful but she is too involved with GOP House maneuvering. We elected her to be OUR voice, not Bobby Harrell's enforcer. And I wouldn't be bragging about all that's been accomplshed in the House since the GOP took over, either. Start saying goodbye, Annette. The clock is ticking.

To Conservative Republican: you sound vindictive
Friday, June 19, 2009 6:41 AM

Just look at your post, some ax to grind somewhere. The truth is Young gets the job done and understands how to get legislation through. You can whine all you want, but I like having Ms. Young in office representing me. To complain about roll call votes is really too much. She has and always will support conservative values and votes with the conservative side of the House chamber. You must be a republican in name only.

Too Funny!
Friday, June 19, 2009 1:17 AM

The critics of Young are not Republicans? Really? Why is that? Her long record of voting is clearly difficult to trace as far too many votes are never recorded in Columbia. Only those that Harrell can use to get re-elected make the cut. Young has stood for Young and the rest of the "Develop Summerville/Dorchester County until those pesky Trees are all Gone" Crowd. A close inspection will reveal there is very little Conservative action in Youngs past otherwise why would she be running for re election less than a year ater she suckered the voters? Harrell is another one for status quo in Columbia despite the disfunction so his word is worthless!

Sounds like some of the posts here are from Rahm Emanuel's folks. What ever happened to the conservative repbulicans in Summerville? The critics of Ms. Young are not Republicans, all you have to do is follow her long record of service and voting pattern. Thank you Bobby Harrell.

She is in trouble and knows it. Bobby is repaying a favor in a vote in the SC house session. HEr time is coming and she is trying to look like a Republican becuase she is having comp. next election. Nice try Boby

why "sound like a democrat"?
Thursday, June 18, 2009 1:26 AM

Just because one person is criticizing a repuglican, that doesn't automatically make that person a democrat. Just ask Bobby Harrell, who wrote this letter to the editor - the repuglican party of our state is so widely split and divided, engaging in arguments and battles all between themselves, that the anti-Young statements could just as well come from a repug - in fact, it's MORE likely to have come from a state GOP member.

Why are you picking on A. Young? Plenty of other political targets. I see her as a powerful legislator who has in fact brought attention to our roads from the state infrastructure bank. This has and will fund our road projects going forward the next few years. You must have an ax to grind. I also think you are not in the real world. Good luck, but you sound vindictive. Next time you want something done for dorchester county, try calling Keith Summey. And sorry, but you still sound like a democrat.

Sorry Bobby Harrell, your protecting your self and your personal interest. Annette Young has done nothing for the folks of her district. However, she's looked out for everyone else in the state. Just look at her list of campaign contributors. Besides all that, I still have that now infamous campaign card she mailed out to each of us that CLEARLY says she bring $315 MILLION to Dorchester County for new infrastructure. I look at it every day, it was all a lie!
