A small group of residents came to Town Council to ask for more modern communication with the police department.
Louis Smith said he represented residents of Robynwyn and Palmetto Park, who were organizing a new civic association.
He said his group has already collected 1,000 cell phone numbers from people who would like to receive text messages about crime and emergencies.
He also suggested the town form a task force to examine the systemic problems in the community leading to crime.
He and others are sick and tired of the violence, he said.
“I refuse to sit down and let this type of violence tear us apart,” he said.
Leonard Larkin, the town’s IT manager, said the town has started looking into text alert systems.
It’s particularly been looking at CodeRED, a commercial product used by law enforcement, higher education and utilities.
