Smoke Free Groups Give Thanks

Dear Editor,

The Smoke Free Lowcountry Coalition and the SC African American Tobacco Control Network wishes to thank Councilman Mike Dawson for his leadership in passing a smoking ordinance for the town of Summerville.  The ordinance will go into effect in July 2011 and will protect workers and the public from exposure to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.   Our community is very fortunate to have such a strong leader as Mike Dawson to have championed this important public health issue.

The coalition recognizes councilmember Kima Garten Schmidt for her continuous support of this issue.  Councilmember Aaron Brown is to be commended for hearing the voice of his constituents and voting on their behalf.  Mayor Berlin G. Myers’ tie breaking vote in favor of the ordinance and concern for the health of his Summerville community will be an important part of his legacy.

We appreciate the Summerville Journal Scene, Judy Watts and Leslie Cantu for coverage of the smoking ordinance.  Public awareness is key to public involvement. Summerville residents signed petitions, wrote letters, made phone calls, and spoke at council meetings and your cry was heard.  Your vision of a smoke free Summerville will soon be a reality.  We thank you for your support of our mission and making Summerville a healthier community.

Martha Dunlap, Smoke Free Lowcountry Coalition

Dianne Wilson, SC African American Tobacco Control Network
