Smokey Summerville behind the times

Dear Editor,

Recently my brother Matthew and I returned home to Summerville from Colorado for our brother John’s wedding.  I was excited to see family and friends that I had not seen for two years but more importantly I was excited to show off my hometown to my fiancé for the first time.   Friday night, after the wedding, we decided to continue the celebration by meeting friends at the Ice House.  What we weren’t expecting was a restaurant and bar filled with cigarette smoke.  I was truly shocked to see how behind the times my hometown was.    Sadly, we had to cut our night short a couple of beers earlier than we do on a night out in Colorado due to the smoke.  More significant though was how physically ill my fiancé felt the next morning from the smoke.

Summerville, who says bars, beers and smoking go together?  Since I moved to smoke free Colorado I have never seen a shortage of bar patrons.  Summerville, do you really believe there are no negative effects from secondhand smoke?  The way my fiancé felt after a night out at the Ice House was proof for me that there is. Summerville, yes I moved away so I don’t matter but what about my parents, grandparents and friends.   C’mon Summerville, next April when we return for our wedding we hope to enjoy celebrating with family and friends in a Smoke Free Summerville!
