Dear Editor,
?Congratulations to the Summerville Community Orchestra and Alex Agrest, conductor, for being named “2009 Most Popular Music Maker” by The Summerville Journal Scene. Having lived in Summerville since the early 1970s and having watched it evolve as a community, the SCO exemplifies the spirit you find only in thriving places. A volunteer organization of highly trained and dedicated musicians – orchestra members – practice weekly in a crowded band room at Alston Middle School because the price is right (no charge) and they have no lace else to go. You see, they have so little money, they are allowed to used music stands at the school because they cannot afford to buy any. Does this discourage them? No. Under the gifted direction of Alex Agrest, they strive to achieve musical perfection for the pure joy that music brings into their lives and ours.
As we begin a new year and a new seaso for the orchestra, please remember the Summerville Community Orchestra as you contemplate which worthy organizations you will support…and maybe..someday we will be fortunate enough to finally achieve the dream of so many here in Summerville, our own performing arts center for our schools, our churches, our theater, our wonderful town…and our souls.
