Dear Mrs. Watts,
Meals on Wheels of Summerville, Inc. is grateful to be a member of a community of people who care for each other. In the past few weeks we have been overwhelmed by the evidence of that by donations from members of our community.
Most recently, the Summerville Thanksgiving Basket Project organized by St. John the Beloved Church, Summerville Presbyterian Church, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s Church after getting together to fill and deliver more than 300 bags of food to residents, donated a portion of their proceeds to Meals on Wheels to help us feed the more than 150 persons in our community who are unable to prepare nutritious meals for themselves.
We are also blessed annually by the seasonal Tea Rooms run by Bethany United Methodist Church and St. Paul’s Church who give all their proceeds to nonprofits including Meals on Wheels.
And then, there is Second Chance, the volunteer thrift shop that shares its profits with many local charities including Meals on Wheels. To date this year they have given us $6,000 – enough to feed six people for a whole year!
The Coastal Community Foundation manages individual’s philanthropic wishes by distributing funds to local nonprofits and we are grateful to be one of those. They have recently set up a fund for Dorchester County that has benefited Meals on Wheels and others.
And I can’t go without thanking Legend Oaks Golf Club. Their Legend Oaks Gives Back charity weekend and tournament has in three years become one of the mainstays of our organization. This year the group raised $18,611 each for Meals on Wheels and Palmetto House – and they did it all with good cheer, hard work and fun for all who participated.
However, as much as these groups do for us, 50 percent of our funding comes from individuals in the community in gifts of all sizes – a few dollars to several thousand. We could not get along without any of these donors or the 200+ volunteers who give of their time and caring to package and deliver the meals five days a week.
Thank you thank you, thank you.
