The Wassamassaw Community Park will open on August 11.

The dedication will only take 20 minutes, but Monday’s grand opening of Summerville’s Wassamassaw Community Park has been in the works for three years.

The town’s newest park will be unveiled at 9:30 a.m. on August 11.

After a ribbon-cutting ceremony and light refreshments, the public will be able to use all the ball fields, playgrounds, walking trails and picnic shelters the 8.65-acre park has to offer.

There will even be a leash-free dog park, according to Mike Hinson, director of the Summerville Town Park and Recreation Department.

“It sits in a heavily wooded urban forest,” Hinson said. “All the features are great.”

The $500,000 park took three years to complete, Hinson said. The town has owned the property, located off Highway 78, at 651 Wassamassaw Road for about five years.

“Wassamassaw; it’s an unusual name, it has Indian lore to it,” Hinson said.

One of the more notable features in the park is an old oil well, which Hinson describes as a “big cast-iron pipe coming out of the ground,” circa 1919.

“We’ve got it isolated with surfacing material,” Hinson said. “As soon as I find the exact history, we’ll put signage.”

The public is invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Summerville Mayor Berlin Myers and Town Councilman Aaron Brown are expected to attend.
