Over 8,500 Berkeley Electric Cooperative members attended the co-ops annual meeting Saturday at the Exchange Park Fairgrounds in Ladson.
As a member-owned electric cooperative, Berkeley Electric Cooperative holds the session in order to bring business matters before its membership and hold elections for its Board of Trustees.
The results of the trustee elections were as follows:
• District 3:    H. Wayne DeWitt (unopposed)
• District 6:    Willis Sanders (unopposed)
• District 9:    John Barry Hart (incumbent) - 3,383 votes (winner); Henry Chavis (by petition) - 2,787 votes.
New Co-op President and CEO Dwayne Cartwright reported that the cooperative would be returning over $2 million to its members this December in the form of capital credits.  He also announced that there would be a modest 2-3 percent fuel cost adjustment to members’ bills in 2013.
Cartwright also reported that BEC members have saved $2 million on their prescription medications through the use of the Touchstone Energy Co-op Connections program as of this year. It’s the second highest savings of any co-op in the country.
Berkeley Electric Cooperative is a member-owned Touchstone Energy electric cooperative with over 84,000 member accounts in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.
