Dr. Linda Karges-Bone and her students from Charleston Southern University who are enrolled in Education 327, “Children’s Literature” are working with students at Malcolm Hursey Elementary School in North Charleston, SC on a project that raises money and awareness for Water Missions International. As part of the annual “Walk for Water” event, students will participate in their own walk and raise funds to build sustainable water filtration units in places like Haiti. To help the students at Hursey Elementary understand the impact of poverty, the future teachers will read books and teach related lessons that address the effects of poverty, hunger, war, and lack of access to clean water as they affect children around the world. Principal LaDene’ Conroy, PE Teacher Amy Douglas, Curriculum Specialist Tamra Setzer, and Dr. Karges-Bone are collaborators on the project. Dr. Bone noted: “The children at Hursey demonstrate such genuine compassion for children who lack access to clean water. Their desire to make a difference is beautiful to see."
