Company’s error mini-windfall for town

  • Monday, January 14, 2013

The town’s $125,000 gain will be the county’s loss.
Summerville Town Council’s finance committee learned Monday that finance staff expect a check from Time Warner Cable for $124,661.
The reason: for the past three years Time Warner Cable has been sending E-911 funds meant for the town to the county instead.
County staff confirmed the company has asked for its money back. The county asked Time Warner for the tax map numbers for each parcel involved so it can confirm those funds were indeed meant for the town and not the county.
Not satisfied with the unexpected budget booster, Town Councilman Walter Bailey said the town should press for interest payments on the money.
“When Time Warner Cable found this error, we proactively reached out to the town of Summerville to make them aware and immediately made the payment. It is Time Warner Cable's policy to diligently ensure all tax liabilities are remitted in accordance with the law,” Time Warner Cable said in a statement.
