DD2 teacher to run for Berkeley county supervisor

At the urging of many people across Berkeley County and after diligent consideration, Dr. Minnie N. Blackwell has announced she will run for Berkeley County Supervisor.

Blackwell, a science teacher with the Dorchester County School District 2, is currently the Mayor of the city of Hanahan.

“The greatest honor of my public life has been to serve the people of the city of Hanahan on city council and as mayor. To have been given this sacred trust to lead them in these positions is something I have never taken for granted,” she said. “I believe we have done many things to improve the quality of life for our people during my terms in office, but feel the time has come for me to allow someone else from the City the opportunity to continue the vision we have helped create.”

However, Blackwell said she is concerned with leadership at the county level and after much consideration and at the urging of many county residents, she has decided to run for the supervisor’s position on the Republican ticket.

“Our present economic, social, and cultural climate calls for the best government we have ever had, one that is responsive, efficient, and creative,” Blackwell said. “The County Supervisor has the ability not only to make substantive improvements in the lives of the people -- in education, jobs, public safety and the delivery of important services -- but also has the ability to set a model and tone of leadership that can filter all the way down the County government’s organizational structure. I would like to offer my style of “servant leadership,” which has been effective in making Hanahan a better place to live, to a wider constituency at the county level. I sincerely believe that I can help make positive, constructive, and beneficial choices and changes in the way our County interacts with its people and its sister counties, our State, and even our Nation.”

Blackwell said she intends to run a vigorous, but positive and clean campaign and urged her opponents, including incumbent Dan Davis, to do the same.

“My campaign will be one in which the people will have an opportunity to see my vision for the County and my spirit to serve,” Blackwell said. “If I am fortunate enough to earn your vote to win the primary and then the general election in the Fall to this high position of sacred trust, I promise I will serve each day of my term with servant leadership, always seeking and striving to find new ways to make life better for all of us in Berkeley County.”
