Democratic candidates descended on Summerville’s White Gables on Feb. 27, discussing important issues with Dorchester County voters and garnering support for the upcoming election season.
More than 100 people attended the Dorchester County Democratic Party BBQ fundraiser to meet and greet candidates for state and local office — from Governor to County Council.
Prominent Democrats in the community also attended, including sitting Summerville Town Council Member Aaron Brown and several county council members.
Dwight Drake, a candidate for governor, said as he mingled with attendees that the current state of the economy should fuel an administration change in the statehouse.
“It’s the failure of (Republican) leaders on every front — ethics and education,” he said. “A failure to lead creates a climate where a Democrat can and will win.”
Each of the candidates running for office gathered near the stage at the White Gables clubhouse and briefly introduced themselves. The format did not allow for speeches.
Democratic candidates for governor in attendance were Dwight Drake, Vincent Sheheen and State Sen. Robert Ford. Other candidates included State Secretary of Education candidate Jim Rex; US Congressional District 1 candidates Col. Robert Burton, Robert Dobbs and Richard Withington; candidate for Senate Vic Rawl; State Superintendent of Education candidate Frank Holleman and Secretary of State candidate Marjorie Johnson.
Candidates for the Dorchester County Democratic Party Executive Committee Marty Turney and Susen Shapiro also attended.
State Rep. Patsy Knight and Dorchester County Councilmen Willie Davis and Kenny Waggoner attended. All their seats are up for re-election this year.
Even though school board elections are non-partisan, DD2 candidates Frances Townsend and Judy Fell both introduced themselves.
As candidates mingled with attendees, they explained what drove them to run for election, and why they would be a good choice.
“We’re excited about the turnout,” said Dorchester County Democratic Party Chairman Steve Yeomans. “We have some extremely viable candidates. The public will take notice.”
