District takes heat for not showing speech

William “Bernie” Mazyck voices his disapproval with Dorchester District 2’s decision to not broadcast live the speech President Barack Obama delivered to students last week.
Dorchester District 2’s decision to not broadcast the speech President Barack Obama delivered to students Sept. 8 was still on the minds of the droves of people who attended Monday night’s board meeting.

With people who couldn’t find a seat either standing in the back of the boardroom or watching from the hallway, Superintendent Joe Pye explained that the district was unaware Obama was scheduled to give a speech until parents started calling the week before and that officials had “no prior knowledge” of the content of Obama’s speech.

The district did not have the technological capabilities to air the speech live in every classroom, said Pye, who added that the decision to have each school record the speech rather than attempt to air it live was made by him and the principals, not the school board.

During the period for public comments, roughly 10 people voiced their displeasure about the fact the speech wasn’t shown live.

William “Bernie” Mazyck, who graduated from Summerville High School about 30 years ago, thanked Pye for his explanation about technological limitations, but said, “the damage has been done.”

“I brought my diploma with me and have toyed with the idea of giving it back to you,” Mazyck said. “That’s my level of disgust.”

Mazyck asked that the district provide an itemized list of all technology expenditures in the last five years as well as a list of all speeches that the students have been shown.

“The impact of the decision and the inability of this district to be able to do what was necessary to see the (speech) may never be repaired,” Mazyck said. “We’ve seen reports in the past of the high school dropout rate that Dorchester 2 is not immune to (and) that one speech could have made the difference.”

Last week, Dorchester 2 Public Information Officer Pat Raynor said that in the days leading up to Obama’s speech, the district received hundreds of phone calls and e-mails from parents who didn’t want their children to view the speech.

At Monday’s meeting, the Rev. Gralin Nix Hampton asked that the district teach students how to make sound decisions for themselves.

“I wouldn’t even think about calling to ask you to show the president’s address,” Hampton said. “I would think that would just be something that would happen.”

Hampton added, “What is educationally unsound about the President of the United States of America, who happens to be a constitutional law professor trained by Harvard, (addressing our youth)?”

Technology limitations may have prohibited the district from showing the speech live, but shouldn’t keep the district from airing the speech district-wide now that each school has a copy, said Felisa Geddis.

“I’d like to see that this speech is played at the same time for each student,” Geddis said. “Let’s do it on one day, the way it was planned. These students need it now. I cannot imagine any speech given by anyone with regard to the importance of education being offensive.”

Geddis said school officials and parents are partners and that both must fulfill their obligations to the children.

“You can depend on me as a parent, but I’m depending on this school board and the members of (my daughter’s) school,” Geddis said. “We’re holding you all accountable for these decisions. Voting time will come around again, trust me.”

At the end of the meeting, Pye thanked the public for attending and expressing their concerns.

“You have every right and should demand to be heard (because) we’re all in this together,” Pye said. “No one ever dreamed (this) would take on wings of this nature.”

Before showing the speech to their students, teachers will inform parents so they have the option to exempt their children. Pye assured those in attendance t hat no child who wants to see the speech would be denied that opportunity.

“The majority of the children, which I will tell you will be 95 percent of them, will be watching the speech but the teachers will have had time (to inform parents),” Pye said. “I think the president should be allowed to speak to the children in our schools.”

THAT is exactly the issue under contention. The action in not allowing this speech because people feared politics was in itself POLITICAL. That's what has so many of us in an uproar. It's disingenuous to purport otherwise when we clearly recognize the reality. Joe Pye may not make smart decisions all the time but he sure ain't dumb, either. He is as much of a political leader as an educator. He and Pat Raynor just shouldn't assume we're dumb either.

Sorry, but your argument is flawed. Your rights end at the point where my rights begin. As an American, you most certainly CAN pray before a football game. Also as Americans, we protect the right of others to NOT pray. That's how it works in our country. Your rights stop where mine begin. And I'm sorry, but a presidential speech to students encouraging them to work hard can hardly be considered political. The decision not to air it was, but the speech itself was not.

The President;s Speech
Tuesday, October 06, 2009 11:58 PM

Why do the students have to watch the president speak? Why did Obama want to show it in schools? Why cant we pray before a football game? Why cant we fly the confederate flag? Why do we have to be politically correct? We are losing rights as quickly as possible by our courts, legislatures, and yes our president. Teachers hands are tied when it comes to discipline. Why? The students have rights? The teachers have none. Let our administrators and teachers teach our kids and if you want to educate them in politics do it at home. If we have politics in our schools why cant we have religion? There are just as many opinions in politics as there are in religion. Next time keep your child home and let him watch TV. This is my tax money also. I don't want my child influenced by a politician.

Obama was given an historially unprecendented mess when he arrived in office, thanks to the previous administration. It took that administration eight years to bankrupt our country. The Bush administration outspent the Clinton administration by five times. In fact, the Bush administration outspent every administration in the past 30 years. CHANGE isn't going to happen overnight.

More millions did vote for him, unlike Mr Bush who was elected by nine sitting folks in black robes. Change? What I see already is an economy whose health is improving and a President who is willing to try to find an answer to a major issue. What's your plan, R.C. Foster? Please enlighten us.

Moving Forward as suggested by Chris

When a mistake is made that presents a valuable opportunity to learn a lesson from the experience. DD4 obviously needs to improve upon its technology. Additional members of the community must make their voices heard by regularly attending school board meetings. Joe Pye should formulate a decision based on a representative sample and not be intimidated by one specific group, who by the way threatened lawsuits. In evaluating future candidates for the school board , we can select individuals who possess an "open mind", demonstrate forward thinking. We cannot remain antiquated.

Don't tell me to sit down and shut up. For as long as we have an appalling 50-60% drop-out rate and a school district run on a political agenda, I will continue to speak out. DD2 claimed it was "being sensitive to what we’ve been dealing with and what’s been going on across the country...with the national (fervor), we have an obligation to be sensitive." I call total BS on that excuse. The only thing "going on" across the country is right-wing hysteria over Obama's earnest efforts to deal with a national crisis in our health care delivery system. I'm fairly sure DD2 didn't choose to not air the speech because of the health care debate, aren't you? Which leaves open this possible interpretation of DD2's perception of "national fervor"...racism, pure and simple. Of all the states in our country, South Carolina has the highest burden to dispel the negative stereotype of our state as racist. Instead of taking the opportunity to dispel that myth, DD2 added fuel to the fire.

It's not whether you let your kid watch it or not. It the district saying they wouldn't allow it. It's the idea that they caved in to a minority that's upset people. It's funny that the same people "tired of griping" would be the first in line at a tea party event.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 9:45 PM

Ok, so the district decided not to air the speech. I read the transcript, watched the video and then let my child watch it...all after school let out. If it is that important to everyone complaining about it, then have your children watch it after school. If you say you don't have access to the internet, try the public library.

ANybody can say move on if you agree with the decision. I'm tired of these types of decisions being made and then told to move on, it's done.Enough. Enough. Enough. DD2 needs to know that we won't tolerate this type of idiocy anymore. And if you make a decision, don't hide. Be willing to stand up and take the heat.

NO EXCUSE
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 5:37 PM

As a graduate from DD2 I am completely ashamed and disgusted like Mr. Mazyck. This excuse is completely and utterly absurd. I know for a fact the DD2 has the ‘technology’ to broadcast Pres. Obama’s speech. I can recall watching The Magic School Bus and Reading Rainbow Knightsville Elementary. I remember watching the tragedy of 9/11 Live at Rolling School of the Arts, and I definitely remember watching CNN at Summerville High School, so I don’t see what the problem was. If there were some classrooms that did not have the ‘technology’ why couldn’t they just watched the broadcast with another class, or hold an assembly with it playing. You mean to tell me the District that has one of the biggest high schools in the state does not have the ‘technology’ to show a live broadcast and yet Principals move around the halls of Summerville High School on Segways! Give me a break Superintendent Pye, or should I say ‘You Lie!’

If it had been Presidents Reagan, Bush 1 or Bush 2, there would have been a special assembly called and district two children would have been given assignments related to the content of the speach. But then again, we are in SC and we see how our leaders at the top represent us, so why does this surpise you? Did anyone at the meeting stand up and shout "you lie" to Joe?

So many of you have nothing to do but complain. What has happened is done, lets move foward and not harp on something with little importance. I do not think that DD2 students will be any different had they seen this video. I respect Joe Pyes choice 100%.

The conservatives of this county have gone way over the edge...don't think Mike Rose and his cronies didn't have any influence over DD2's decision to not air the President's educational address to American students. "W" nor John McCain could have delivered such an address, because they were both miserable failures as students. Both our President and his wife are exemplary models for educational success due to hard work and determination to succeed in less than ideal situations.

Be Real
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 11:32 AM

The district boasts how advanced they are with technology. Now Pat Raynor is citing the Governor's "entourage" as a diruptive influence in a crowded school. This utter lack of candor is insulting to us as parents and is becoming a trend. Make a decision and give the real reason and let Joe Pye be courageous enough to take his lumps. That's why he gets the big bucks.

Priorities
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 11:15 AM

Our elected officials and those who are appointed have a resposibility to make decisions based on what is in the best interest of the students. All of the students. It may be that some parents do not wish to have their children hear the President speak. That is their right. However, the opportunity to hear our country's leader speak about education should be the right of every student. To make excuses for the bad judgement DD2's leaders have used is lame. If you lack the technology that other school systems have it is your own fault. You have ample funding to do the things you want to do. When you are wasteful with your funding and cannot provide for ALL of your students you simply have your priorities out of order. If you lack the technology necessary to allow students to hear the President, speak how can you be meeting the technology needs of your students?

Ridiculous.
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 10:55 AM

This is the most ridiculous debate I have ever seen. I am proud to live in the United States. I am proud to have the right to voice my opinions. We, as Americans…have a President. Whether you are for or against his policies and actions, he is still our President and deserves respect as such. It is unbelievable to me that parents would disrespect our country like this and teach their children that it is ok to be this respectful to our President. We as American’s all need to listen to what is said, how else will we be educated enough to know the differences? It isn’t mandatory to agree, but wouldn’t be smart to listen and understand? Isn’t that how opinions and beliefs are formed? How sad that our public school, that pleads for money from the government made a decision like this…. to be so disrespectful. I wonder how many of the parents that didn’t want their “children” to listen are on unemployment, receiving benefits from our government…I wonder if they realize how and why they have the rights that they have. To say the content of his speech wasn’t provided to be “approved”…are you kidding me?? This is reality, this is why we are here…I wonder how many of these same kids are allowed to go to movies such as “Saw” or play video games that everyone is being murdered and massacred… wait, yes…that’s a much better influence. Unreal, sad, disappointing and a real eye opener to why some of our teenagers lack respect for people and authority

Let's turn this state around
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 9:50 AM

Reading this is so sad. South Carolina is in trouble. We are in a downward spin in everything that should be right with our state. "A house (state) divided can not stand". I know we are discussing DD2 but the districts in SC are being relected as a whole. When will we get wise enough to stop throwing insults and jabs at each other to feel better about what we have not done ourselves and start becoming a part of a plan to move this state or district into a oneness that we can be proud of. If the districts get right the state will get right. I heard one time, "if you see an area that is lacking and want to complain.....bring the complaint (not threatening critizism) and offer a solution". Be a part of the solution not just enjoy the complaining. Let's give our children something to be proud of.... a heritage in SC that turned the tide of fault finding, etc. We are known as one of the friendliest states but we can't be friendly with each other. There is a way to approach things and much gets done, and then there is a threating attitude that says, "my way is the only way" were nothing gets done. What are we going to do as citizens to make the area around us better for our future and leave this state a better place for our children and grandchildren? 1-Self control is a must, it keeps us from looking stupid later. 2-Be willing to listen to everyones ideas, you might hear something that inspires you. 3-Everyone has rights, let's respect them. 4-Pray for our district and state leaders, they need it.

Just Wondering?
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 9:26 AM

So how many of those who complained (Mr. Mazyck, Mr. Hampton, or Mrs. Geddis) made an effort to record the speech or find a copy so that their child could see it after the school dropped the ball? Just wondering…

Lacking technology?
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 8:57 AM

Maybe DD2 should have shown the speech on the jumbotron at the football stadium. The "community" of football can always find a way to provide the most state of the art items for the redshirt brigade, but can't support the same for the classroom. Your actions speak louder than your words.

My problem with DD2 is how disengenuous they're being, citing everything but the real reason. They often boast how advanced they are with technology but can't show a simple TV presentation? At less than 20 minutes it didn't disrupt that much. At least be honest, Pat Raynor. Tell the real reason and take the heat. You're hurting Joe Pye's credibility. Now I don't know if I can believe anything else they say.

And exactly what TV rating do you suppose this inspirational pep talk would receive? Of course it's your right to vet what your kid sees on TV. But this is more than just a TV show. What else do you pull your kids out of learning or seeing ? Do you monitor everything the teacher does or is it just this? I'm trying to understand if it's really the material or is it the messenger. What message are we sending to our kids? That you can't trust authority?

Let's just be honest that DD2 administrators were afraid they'd be seen as supporters of Obama if they showed his speech. They would never have taken so many precautions and danced so fast to avoid criticism. The speech was shown on TV for God's sake. DD2 doesn't have TV?
