Dorchester County participating in the Great Southeast Shakeout

  • Thursday, October 11, 2012

The week of Oct. 14 – 20 is South Carolina Earthquake Awareness Week and is an opportunity to heighten the level of awareness for one of the major hazards that may yield catastrophic results. The Dorchester County Emergency Management Department is encouraging participation from local government, private industry and their citizens in the Great SouthEast ShakeOut on October 18, 2012 at 10:18am.
The Great SouthEast ShakeOut is a regional initiative and an opportunity for participants to practice their initial earthquake response procedures by following three simple steps: Drop to the ground, take Cover under a table or desk, and Hold On as if a major earthquake was occurring (for at least 60 seconds). To date, there are more than 810,000 registered participants in the U.S. Southeast region including individuals, local government, schools and private businesses.
While the Charleston-Summerville area has not been significantly impacted from an earthquake since 1886, it’s important that the community acknowledge that the hazard exists and take the necessary actions to be prepared. “Being prepared is an individual responsibility”, says Mario Formisano, the county Emergency Management Director.
Being informed on what to do before, during and after an emergency is the first step. Make a plan for how you as an individual or your family will respond to an emergency include identifying several meeting locations and out of town contacts. Build a kit containing supplies from food and water to various tools to be self sufficient for 72 hours. Finally, get involved and take advantage of community preparedness activities like the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program.
