On Saturday, a group of local artists will team with Firewater Grille for an event designed to delight the senses.
At “A Taste For Art & Wine,” people can enjoy a free wine tasting and interact with the dozen or so artists of Art Central who will showcase work both inside and outside the restaurant.
A variety of artwork, including photographs and acrylic, watercolor and mixed media paintings, will be on display and available for purchase.
The event, which will take place at Firewater Grille from 5-7:15 p.m., will be followed by a four-course wine dinner from 7:15-9 p.m. The artwork will be displayed throughout the evening.
Bob Shipley, owner of Firewater Grille, which opened about seven months ago, chose to decorate much of his restaurant with paintings and photographs done by the women of Art Central. Several dozen photographs and paintings line the restaurant’s walls.
“It’s been a great conversation piece for those dinning with us, it’s added to the décor of the restaurant and it really makes me feel good when I walk through and see people admiring the work,” Shipley said.
Rene Bruce, a painter with Art Central, is excited for the opportunity to discuss her work with local residents and visitors alike.
“As artists, when we create our work, it’s almost always alone so having the public look at the work and offer feedback is very gratifying,” Bruce said. “When someone looks at a piece you’ve done and relates to it in some way, they’re connecting with something that you also connected to.”
June Sullivan, a photographer with Art Central, says Summerville residents often believe they have to make their way to Charleston to admire and purchase fine art, when in actuality Summerville has its fair share of talented artists.
“It benefits the community to know that there is an art (scene) in Summerville and we’re hopeful the evening will help people realize our cultural presence,” Sullivan said. “After all, what could be better than food, wine and art?”
“A Taste For Art & Wine” will take place at Firewater Grille, 109 Holiday Drive, Summerville. Call 261-2121 for more information or to make reservations for the four-course dinner ($49.95/person) that will follow the free wine tasting.
Art Central is located at 130 Short Central Ave., Summerville.
