Dorchester Habitat for Humanity’s 10th Annual Oyster Roast and Chill Cook-Off was a great success, drawing more supporters than in any previous year, according to Habitat officials.
The event, held Jan. 21, was filled with food and fun as patrons ignored their New Year’s resolutions at the Summerville Country Club.
Hungry oyster lovers brandished oyster knives waited around long tables for the steamy seafood. Grilled-to-perfection hot dogs and toppings of chopped onions, grated cheese, and home-cooked chili were on hand. S’mores, chocolate chip cookies and brownies rounded out the menu, while coffee, iced tea, lemonade and a cash bar quenched thirsts.
Twelve chefs vied for first-place in the Chili Cook-Off, and Mary Pearson was the contest winner. As her reward, she received the famous “Traveling Golden Oyster” statuette, $100 in gift certificates to local restaurants, and best of all, bragging rights until next year’s Oyster Roast. Carolyn Haggerty was the chili contest’s second place winner, and Jim Rushin placed third.
Golden Oldie tunes, country-western melodies and standards played by Carolina Beach Music added to the festive atmosphere, while patrons vied for repurposed treasures at a Silent Auction. Some unique prizes included a “Chandelier Chair,” an eye-catching wrought iron patio table and chairs, an oversized hand-painted cast iron frying pan, and a “Harley Davidson” rocking chair and refinished chest.
All proceeds from this event will contribute to Dorchester Habitat for Humanity’s continuing mission of “Putting God’s love into action by bringing people together building homes and hope.”
