State troopers have arrested a Summerville man in connection with a hit-and-run on Bacons Bridge Road late Sunday that killed a 60-year-old bicyclist.
Collin Vincent Kentrus, 19, of Summerville, was arrested Monday night and charged with leaving the scene of a collision involving death, said Lance Cpl. Bob Beres of the S.C. Highway Patrol. He was being held at Dorchester County Detention Center Tuesday morning pending a bond hearing.
On Monday night, Kentrus went to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office claiming he had hit a deer the night before, Beres said. Sheriff’s deputies knew there was a fatal hit-and-run around the same time and alerted Highway Patrol investigators.
“We went and located the car at (Kentrus’) friend’s house and the damage wasn’t consistent with a deer strike,” Beres said. “We matched up some of the evidence we had to confirm that was the vehicle and this was the driver.”
Kentrus was arrested at the sheriff’s office a short time later.
Kentrus drove a 2003 red Toyota at the time of the collision, Beres said. Earlier Monday, troopers described a similar vehicle of interest: a red Toyota Corolla, model years 2002-2007, with damage on the right- or passenger-side headlight assembly, windshield wipers and right-side mirror.
“We found some evidence at the scene that linked us to the vehicle and model,” Beres said.
The victim of the hit-and-run was identified as Samuel R. Cox Jr., who lived on Bacons Bridge Road, according to Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet.
Authorities were alerted to the victim’s body Monday morning after a passing motorist spotted him in a ditch next to the roadway about 6 a.m., Beres said.
Cox is believed to have died Sunday night after he was hit sometime before 11 p.m. while riding his bicycle between Tasker and Tyvola drives. About 10 p.m. Sunday, a motorist reportedly saw a mangled bike in that same area. Cox was pedaling the bike against traffic — toward S.C. Hwy. 61 — when he was hit, Beres said.

This man, Sam R. Cox Jr. was a U.S. Veteran with a son and loved ones who cared deeply for him. I am displeased with this journal's choice of photography. As if laying in a ditch and being left to die prior to the portrayal this scene wasn't disregard enough. In honor of his life, this picture is much more appropriate. This is the man whose life was lost on that tragic day. http://su.pr/2pawma

Was the mangled bike reported to the police at 10 pm on Sunday and did anyone check it out?

Just another product of their environment. May a lesson be learned for Collin, he should've actually attended school instead of sitting at Tastee Freeze smoking cigarettes. As far as the victim goes, no one in this world deserves what happened to him.

It's a tragedy what happened to this man, and I would bet my paycheck that this 19-yo kid in a red Toyota was speeding at the time. I live near BB and it's all too common - I've lost count of how many speeders fly through there! My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

While the picture of a loved ones body draped in cloth is quite upsetting. Even more upsetting is that someone would cause that kind of harm and keep going. Maybe if the boy had some sort of respect for human life he would have stopped and gotten help for this poor man, instead he left him in a ditch mortally wounded to die alone. Once again it proves that our society is all about me and not about us. Sometimes doing the right thing isn't the easiest but in the long run it is the best way to go. My sympathies to both families that have been altered forever due to this tragedy. Rest in peace Mr.Cox and I'm so sorry your life ended this way.

Is the photo of the body really necessary? The fact that it is covered does not make it o.k. It is disrespectful and could prove to be upsetting to the family. Please Journal Scene, show some decency and remove the photo.
