Two parents accused of homicide by child abuse/neglect in connection with the death of their 13-year-old son are now behind bars.

Kimberly Marie Love, 32, and Jason Monroe Buckley, 29, both of Summerville, turned themselves in to the Summerville Police Department Sunday night, according to Capt. Jon Rogers.

A Dorchester County Magistrate Court judge denied bond for Buckley and Love during a hearing Monday morning. Due to the nature of the charges, a circuit court judge will have to decide whether to set a bond.

Rogers said officers responded to a call at a residence at 1925 Bacons Bridge Road regarding an unresponsive juvenile male. Upon arrival, the juvenile was evaluated and declared deceased. An autopsy revealed that the manner of death was homicide, caused by malnutrition and neglect, Rogers said.

An obituary in last Wednesday’s Journal Scene identified the child as 13-year-old Joshua Jacob Mendoza.

Rogers said the investigation is still very much in the beginning stages. However, he did say investigators were informed that the child did have some health issues.

The investigation continues.
