Summerville Journal Scene ®
Update, Oct. 23 (10:40 a.m.) — Although a preliminary report is not expected for another 10 days, and the official cause may take more than a year to determine, the National Transportation Safety Board on Thursday discussed some early findings from its investigation into Wednesday morning's crash.
NTSB investigator Shawn Etcher said the plane banked to the left after takeoff. Judging by marks found on trees near the wreckage, it appears the plane climbed to an altitude of at least 90 feet before crashing, he said.
Radar coverage does not begin until 500 feet, he said. "We know he (pilot Peter Radding) did not get to that altitude."
The temperature was 40 degrees and there was a calm wind at the time of takeoff, Etcher said. Weather has not been ruled out as a factor, however.
"We're not ruling anything out," he said. "We're just gathering information."
The wreckage is being taken to Atlanta for closer examination, Etcher said.
He said the engines are the most recognizable pieces among the wreckage. The aircraft's aluminum skin is gone, "but there's a lot of structure (in the frame) we can look at."
--------------
Four men on their way to a ham radio competition in the Bahamas were killed in a small plane crash Wednesday morning at the Summerville Airport in Jedburg.
The Summerville-based plane — a twin-engine, six-seat Piper Aztec — burst into flames after it crashed into a densely-wooded area about 6:20 a.m., Dorchester County Administrator Jason Ward said.
The plane had just taken off from the county-owned airport on Greyback Road. Ward characterized the crash site, which was 250 yards east of the runway, as “extremely severe.”
County officials have said little about what may have caused the crash, instead deferring to the National Transportation Safety Board in Washington D.C., which is the lead investigating agency.
An investigator was at Summerville Airport Thursday morning and could remain there through Friday, NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway said.
The wreckage itself may be transported to an off-site hangar, possibly in Atlanta, he said.
Typically, it takes the NTSB between 12 and 18 months to determine the cause of a crash, but a preliminary report is expected in five to 10 days, Holloway said.
Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet on Wednesday identified the four victims: pilot Peter Radding of North Charleston; front passenger James Randolph Hargenradar of Summerville; rear passenger Edwin Steeble of Summerville; and rear passenger Dallas Carter of Laurel, Del.
Hargenradar was 55 years old, Nisbet said. The other men’s ages were not available at press time but they were said to be in their 50s or 60s.
They were headed first to Fort Pierce, Fla. then on to the Bahamas where they planned to attend a ham radio competition, Nisbet said.
Radding had flown to Delaware earlier this week to pick up Carter, Nisbet said.
The group was set to participate in the CQ World Wide DX Competition, a contest that draws the participation of thousands of amateur radio operators from around the world, said Jon Zaimes, a friend of Carter’s who lives in Delaware.
Many operators, including Zaimes, communicate from their home stations during the contest, but traveling to another country, like the Bahamas, scores a contestant more points, he said.
Zaimes did not know Hargenradar or Steeble, but he said Radding and Carter were “major league amateur radio operators, known around the world for their endeavors.”
Autopsies on all four men were scheduled for Thursday. Positive identification may require dental records, Nisbet said. Family members confirmed the men were planning to fly together Wednesday.
Radding’s plane — the only one scheduled to depart from Summerville Airport on Wednesday morning — was missing from his hangar, but his vehicle was there, as was Steeble’s, said Nisbet. Hargenradar’s wallet was found in the wreckage.
Nisbet said it appears the severity of the crash, not the fire, is what killed the men.
It was extremely dark when the plane took off, Ward said. Airport Manager Don Hay said the weather was clear at the time.
Nisbet said Radding filed a flight plan detailing his route and who was on board, but the plane never climbed high enough for those plans to be activated. Radding had 40 years experience flying planes and knew the area, Ward said.
Hargenradar also was a licensed pilot, according to Nisbet.
Stella Bazzle, who lives about a half-mile from the airport, recalled hearing two explosions around the time the plane went down.
“The motor sounded like it was coming over the house. I heard the first explosion . . . then the second (explosion) wasn’t as loud,” she said.
Of the engine noises, Bazzle said: “It was kind of a funny noise, like a grinding type thing.”
The crash was the fourth in the history of Summerville Airport and the third involving a plane, according to Ward. The other crash involved a helicopter.

It has been little over a week since this tragedy has occured and the shock of losing 3 of my good friends still reverberates in my heart. It will be quite some time before the pain of losing my good friends and teammates will heal. It is very painful knowing that I will not work my friends on the air or see them in person again. My thoughts and prayers goes out to their families and also to the LCCC team members who also suffer this great loss.

I first met Dallas in 1977 when I participated in a few DX contests at K4CG, the Coast Guard's amateur radio (and MARS) station on Telegraph Road, just south of Washington, D.C. Thirty years later we met again, this time by chance, when I happened across his signal on the ham bands and overheard him reminiscing about the old K4CG days! When he finished that contact, I gave him a call, and we renewed our acquaintance. We talked for over an hour, and our little "chat" remains in my memory as being one of the warmest, most memorable conversations I have ever had in over 40 years on the air. What a wonderful human being! And what a tragedy this is. My deepest condolences to Dallas' family, and to the families of my other lost brothers of the airwaves.

Posted by: Mietek - SP9NWN Our deepest condolances to the families Thursday, October 22, 2009 1:14 AM These fine dedicated men will first of all be missed by their families, their beloved ones and close friends. The loss is needless to say, greatest for those who were closest. However, this is also a painful loss to the whole international Amateur Radio and Contesting community, who in sad days like this, for a while forget the struggle to be on top of the score lists, and simply for a while peacefully give these lost friends a time of deserved attention. Many of us are planning to participate in the contest that became the destiny of these fine men. We will compete as before, but I am sure many of us, in the middle of the dark night, on some lonely frequency with statics... would have done anything to be able to hear the voices of you, our fallen heroes come across to our receivers. Our dear Radio Sport friends and Amateur Radio brothers - be sure we all miss you tremendously and the memories of you will always be in our minds. As the breadth of these comments show, the amateur radio community, in general, and contesters, in particular, are a worldwide family sharing a common interest, even if one does not know each other in person. As such, it is difficult to lose a member of one's family as we have in this case. My condolences to the family.

Although I never meet these gentlemen in person, I did "met them" 42 times in the past three years on my radio, in radio competitions that both they and I enjoy. It is a great loss to the amateur community but an even bigger loss to their families, co-workers, and friends who knew them. The love, affection, and influence they shared comes through loud and clear after reading some of the 250+ messages left on this article. Their world-wide influence and notoriety can also be seen in the call signs that are posted in the messages. For those who are not intimately familiar with these "nicknames", people from the following countries and areas of the world have left their thoughts regarding the loss of lives: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, ,Columbia, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Madeira Island, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, Sardinia Island, Serbia, Slovak Republic, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United States, Venezuela, and the Virgin Islands. RIP Pete, Ed, Randy, and Dallas. I will miss you too, along with your family and friends.

The Araucaria DX Group mourns the loss our friends Pete, Ed, Randy and Dallas. Over the years our members have had the privilege of having them in our contest logs, both individually or as C6APR. The extraordinary extent of worldwide tributes in this page is a moving testimony of the exceptional human beings they were. Our prayers and hearts are with their families, hoping that their legacy of love, friendship and enthusiasm will warm and comfort the hearts of those whose lives were touched by them.

My sincerest condolences to the family members of all four. I met Dallas many years ago shortly after I became a ham. He started out as an acquaintence and became a close friend. He helped me set up my station and he spent many weekends contesting with me until I moved out of the area and he set up his incredible station in Laurel. I came back to the area several times to contest with him there. When Pat (KW3Z) told me what happened I was just stunned. Two days later it still does not seem real and I have a huge hole in my heart. So many memories...the expeditions to Smith Island, the car trips to Philadelphia for the FRC meetings, the rides in that red corvette he had, having coffee with him and Lucy in their kitchen, working field day, antenna and tower work, fishing on his boat and the list goes on. To his daughter and grand-daughter, many, many thanks for sharing this remarkable human being with us. I know that I am a richer person for having known him, for being mentored by him, and for being known as a friend of his. Words cannot express what an incredible loss this is for his family, the delmarva community, and the amateur radio fellowship. For me, I have lost a friend. 73's Chief, you will be sorely missed.

40 years ago this weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Dallas Carter for the first time. At the time I was attending college in Washington, DC, and somehow managed to be invited to operate with others from the Coast Guard Club station, K4CG, in Alexandria, VA. Being the new "kid" on the block I was directed to sit in front of the dead band radio most of the weekend. But I remember the kindness Dallas extended me, having me cover his position when he took breaks. My friend... RIP, your buddies Chet, Ron, Howie, and Bud mourn your loss, and will always remember you. My sincerest condolences to the families left behind by this terrible accident.

Never knew any of these four hams personally, but I will always remember Dallas. I worked Dallas for my Delaware contact for my Worked All States award. It was the last one I needed, and he seemed very happy to give it to me. He is in my log book and his card in my album. We chatted for a few minutes, and he impressed me as a fine gentlemen who was so willing to help others. Dallas and his associates all will be missed greatly by our amateur radio fraternity. My prayers are with their families and friends for peace of mind during this troubling time. Rest in Peace Guys, we miss you. 73 de Gene AF3Y

It has been over a day since I first read of the accident that claimed the lives of my brothers in amateur radio, including my friend Randy, and I am still having a hard time thinking about it. To the families of these fine men, please accept my deepest condolences during this time of your sorrow. You are all in our prayers for God's consoling touch. While I never had the pleasure of meeting Pete, Ed, or Dallas, I know they had to be men of good character and good will because Randy associated himself with them. I met Randy about 12 years ago when I, too, lived in Summerville. I found in him a kindred soul who loved to build a new piece of radio equipment, then use it enough to make sure it worked before moving on to the next project. In this endeavor Randy had “The Knack” needed to be successful. Randy was always giving and ready to lend a helping hand whenever someone needed it. I still have two antennas he built then handed to me saying “see how these work for you”. We would often meet for lunch with our latest projects on the table between us and discuss them and the plans we had for others. After I settled in Columbia, we would talk via cell phones about our latest projects as I drove on the highways and back country roads of S.C. and still manage an occasional lunch together. I will miss my friend and know that he would understand if, on a late dark night as we tune across the band and our memories intermingle with the signals coming in, till we are sure we heard a faint “73 de K4QO.” 73 my friend and God Bless de W4TCO

To all of you who have posted your sympathies, I thank you. My dad was Dallas Carter. I had not met the other three gentlemen but know that they had the same love and passion for Ham radios as my dad did. Dad was so excited about this trip, he talked about it all the time. He joked that due to weight restrictions on the plane he had to take half the bristles out of his tooth brush and carry it in his shirt pocket. Although I miss him now and ask the big "WHY" question so many of us do... I know that dad left this world and entered the next with dear friends at his side and while doing what he truly loved. I am sure this will bring me some peace in the future. Thank you all once again for your kindness, support and caring words for all of these dear men.

I grew up with the Steeble family. Ed's son is my best friend. Can't remember a time when I didn't know them. Wonderful, wonderful family. I can't tell you how many times or how many crazy methods were employed when Mr. Steeble (Ed) would ask me to help him stand up a new antenna in his yard! Bow and arrow, fishing rod, duct tape all come to mind. Stories I will never forget. I can't believe the incredible outpouring of support shown here. What an incredible community! These fine dedicated men will first of all be missed by their families, their beloved ones and close friends. Rest In Peace and we will see you again on another frequency another day...

There is no finer man than Pete Radding. I was blessed to meet him several years ago. I knew him first as a friend, second, as a wanted brother, and third, as everything else. He epitomized all of human good, and while I am struggling with happened this morning, I know in my soul that Peter's first thought was of Tina, and then of his passengers. I cry for him, Tina, Peter Jr., Nicole, family and grandkids....God, he loved you all so much...he was the glue for our little group....Gary, Marcia, Glo, Bonnie....let's not lose what he made possible for us. We are just a lucky, small part of the beautiful contribution Peter left behind....who would have believed....I miss him so much already....I am sure all of us do...Peter, God Speed....we will meet you at our wings' time.....Forever, your early, probably defecting, Corning contingency, but with the utmost love and forever being, Rich and Jill
