Summerville Estates Resident Wins Hearing Aids

  • Thursday, November 22, 2012

Linda Burger is congratulated by Dr. Whitfield, center, and Dr. Alberto, right, after being fitted for the hearing aids she won in Hearing Care’s recent essay contest. Ms. Burger’s daughter wrote the winning essay.

In the spirit of the holidays, Dr. Beth Alberto and Dr. Chuck Whitfield, audiologists at Hearing Care of Summerville, wanted to provide a pair of digital hearing instruments for a deserving individual who otherwise might not be able to acquire them.  “The holidays are a time of connecting with others,” says Dr. Alberto.  “We want to help someone enjoy all of the sounds of the season without worrying about still trying to make ends meet.”

On Tuesday, November 13, these two doctors of audiology presented a special member of the Summerville community with the gift of hearing.  In partnership with Oticon, Hearing Care of Summerville sponsored the first Annual Sounds of the Season Essay Contest.  An independent panel judged the essay nominations based upon various criteria and at the practice’s annual Patient Appreciation Celebration, Ms. Linda Burger, a resident at Summerville Estates, was awarded a free pair of Oticon Ino Pro digital hearing instruments.

Ms. Burger’s daughter nominated her with a compelling essay indicating her mother was losing her vision.  While other senses are normally used to compensate, Ms. Burger’s hearing is also diminishing.  Her vision cannot be corrected, but with digital hearing instruments, she will be better equipped to function independently and “re-engage” with others.

Ms. Burger was extremely excited to be announced as the winner and was able to be fit with her new aids immediately following the announcement – in time for Thanksgiving.
