Summerville, SC (September 8, 2010) – The Summerville Family YMCA is pleased to announce that two artists that have been chosen to represent the Y’s flagship fundraiser, the annual Flowertown Festival. For the 2011 event, two local artists were chosen – Diane Frankenberger and Kathleen Wiley.

Well-known resident of Summerville, and owner of People, Places & Quilts (a fabric/sewing store in Summerville and Charleston), Diane Frankenberger created a hand-drawn, hand-colored rendition of various Summerville scenes including the Y’s Flowertown Festival. She presented

her artwork to the Y to be used specifically to raise funds for the organization and to assist in promoting the Festival.

Diane was inspired to draw by her father and her great-grandmother. “My style is my own”, says Diane. “I am untaught formally and what I do, I know to be called folk art, from the soul without regard to exactness.” Diane is an author and has won numerous awards for her original quilt designs. She lives in Summerville with her husband, Marvin Cregger, and loves the Flowertown Festival which she describes as, “Summerville having a party and everybody comes.”

Kathleen Wiley’s oil on canvas painting, entitled “White Water Lily”, captured the eye of YMCA Special Events & Development Director, Linda Walton. “The Y is so excited to further our relationship with local artists and when I saw Kathleen’s painting I knew… it would be prefect to represent the 39th Annual Flowertown Festival!”

As a young girl growing up on a horse farm, Kathleen has always been fascinated with animals and their depiction in art. She started her professional career as a wildlife artist in 1997 and has since been selected to exhibit at various juried art shows including SEWE, the Northeast Wildlife Fine Art Expo (where she placed 1st in the wildlife category), Wings and Wildlife, Allentown Art Festival and the Jamestown Nature Art Festival.

Kathleen moved to Summerville in 2004 and is the current President of the Summerville Artist Guild. She is also an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild.

Both artists work will be used in the coming months as the Y begins advertising and promoting their award-winning fundraiser, the Flowertown Festival. The Flowertown Festival will be April 1-3, 2011.
