Norma Jean Clark Chappell, 83, of Summerville, wife of Bernard Lee Chappell died January 26, 2010 at MUSC.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Summerville Baptist Church, 417 Central Avenue, Summerville. A visitation and luncheon will follow immediately after the service for friends and family. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summerville Baptist Church, Debt Retirement Fund or Gideon’s Society, 417 Central Avenue, Summerville, SC 29483.
Mrs. Chappell was born on July 30, 1926 in Charleston, IL, a daughter of the late Roy Everett Clark and Lura Bell Nickell Clark. She obtained a BS of Education from Eastern Illinois University, continued her education with a MS of Education from the University of Mississippi, and later achieved a Specialist Degree from the University of Illinois. She was a member of two honorary societies, Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi, and social society Sigma Sigma Sigma. Her career of 36 years in education included 24 at the college level in Taiwan, William Carey College, Hattiesburg, MS and Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL.
Mrs. Chappell was a long time member of Summerville Baptist Church. Her many activities included being a member of the JOY Singers Choir, the Bagwell Ladies Sunday School class, and the singles ministries.
In addition to her husband, Bernard, she is survived by one daughter, Lana J. Tencate (Chuck) of Ellison Bay WI, one son, Steven C. Green (Tina) of Plainfield, IL, one step-daughter, Julia K. Reguard (Keith) of Bloomington, IL, one step-son, Bernard L. Chappell, Jr. (Terry) of Forest Hill, MD, one brother, Ronald L. Clark (Bonnie) of Charleston, IL, one sister-in-law, Natalie Clark of Asheville, NC, four grandchildren, two step-grandsons and many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by one brother, Tom Clark.
