Shirley Anne Alexander Gibson of Grouse Road, Summerville, died early Saturday morning, December 10, 2011 at Trident Medical Center after a long bout with cancer.

Shirley was born in Charlotte, NC and raised in Summerville where she attended schools. She was a graduate of Summerville High and was drum majorette in 1952 and 1953, proudly leading the team to numerous victories.  She loved shagging and was the Queen of Shag at Folly Beach.  She married her first and only true love, Captain Ernest Gibson, USMC.  She was a faithful and dedicated Marine wife following her husband to many different duty stations.  In the early seventies she elected to return to Summerville to raise her children in the small town environment with old fashion qualities she grew up with.  She was a strong supporter of her children and later grandchildren’s activities even preparing eggs benedict as an afternoon snack for her grandchildren.  She was an avid golfer, bridge player, skier, seamstress, gourmet cook and most of all a true friend and confidante.

She leaves to cherish her memory; daughter Vickey Simmons and granddaughters Savannah of USC and Kirby of Summerville High; son Greg and wife Cathryn of Sandpoint, Idaho and grandsons Kyle of University of Idaho and Jasper of Western Washington University; son Wesley and granddaughters, Judith Anne and Sara Burns both of Pinewood Pres, sisters Eleanor Knight and Carolyn Salter; brother Jack Alexander and many dear nieces and nephews and friends galore around the world.  She was predeceased in death by her parents, Margaret and Raymond Alexander, sisters Peggy and Mary Alice and daughter n law, Heather Moberly Gibson.  The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff at both Trident Medical Center and Charleston Cancer Center for their devoted, compassionate and tender care-We shall never forget you.

Please join us for a celebration of Shirley’s life at 2 o’clock, Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at the Dorchester Boat Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Heathers House Cancer Care Services, Sandpoint, Idaho 83864 or www.communitycancerservices.org.
