Gilbert McClung Gillespie, Jr., 69, passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. Born in Lexington, VA on September 19, 1940 to Gilbert McClung Gillespie, Sr. and Ann Irene Feazell, Gil is survived by his beloved wife Carol of 41 years, four daughters Anne Mitchell, Laura DeHaan, Lynne Shirey, Jill Kendrick, six grandchildren, sister Madeline Douty and brother Paul Gillespie.

Gil was an active member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Sullivan’s Island, SC, where he served as elder, and an Affiliate Member at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, NC. He also served on the board of the United Way and was Treasurer of the Military Magnet Academy.

Gil was a 1963 graduate of North Carolina State University, earning a BS degree in Chemical Engineering. Gil lived and worked around the country, as well as in Brazil, through his more than 42 year career with MeadWestvaco. After retiring as President of the Kraft division in 2006, Gil lived in both Charleston, SC and Hendersonville, NC. When he was not traveling around the world, Gil pursued his passion for golf, photography and genealogy.

The memorial service was held Saturday, July 31st at 2:00pm at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Columbia, SC. A family burial was held in Lexington, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that gifts be made to: The Gil Gillespie Leukemia Research Fund Supporting Dr. Joseph Moore at Duke University Medical Center. Gifts can be mailed to: Tom Kosempa, Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center, 512 South Magnum Street, Suite 400, Durham, NC  27701.
