Donald Oliver Nellis, Sr., 88, of Summerville, SC, died Monday, August 9, 2010 at The Village at Summerville.

Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, August 13, 2010 at Beaufort National Cemetery at 11:30 o’clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salvation Army, PO Drawer 22587, Charleston, SC 29413.

Mr. Nellis relocated to Summerville, SC in 2009 to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1922, a son of the late Oliver Clement Nellis and Rose Mary Taylor Nellis. He served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. Mr. Nellis later joined the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. After becoming a U.S. citizen he resided in Austin, Texas where he worked as a researcher in Nuclear Physics. He later worked for the “Nuclear Regulatory Commission” in the Washington, DC area. He served as a Scout Master and a Troop Committee Member for the Boy Scouts of America.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Smallwood Nellis of Summerville, SC; one sister, Mrs. Bell Luders and husband Chuck of St. Catharines, Ontario Canada; son, Donald Nellis, Jr. and wife Donna of Columbia, MD; daughters, Mrs. Heather Doucette and husband Fred of St. Catharines, Ontario and Mrs. Nancy Nellis-Brown and husband Don of Summerville, SC;  nine grandchildren, Amber Melville and Don Churchill of St. Catharines, Ontario Canada; Eric, Mark, Amy, Brett, and Christopher Nellis of Columbia, MD and Than MacKenzie and Molly Brown of Summerville, SC; one great-grandchild, Ryder Melville of St. Catharines, Ontario Canada and a sister-in-law, Oli Nellis of California.
