Wallace "Ack" Ackerman passed away on Monday, January 25, 2010. A celebration of his life was held Thursday at Stallsville United Methodist Church, Summerville, on what would have been his 90th birthday. A viewing was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27th at the James A. Dyal Funeral Home in Summerville. Mr. Ackerman was born on January 28, 1920 in Cottageville, SC to Mr. & Mrs. Clement & Virginia Jordan Ackerman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna S. Ackerman, and one brother, Clement E. Ackerman, Jr. Ack was a proud alumni of Clemson University (1941). Ack served in the United States Army Air Corp as a 1st Lieutenant during WWII prior to working 40 years at Mead-Westvaco as a chemical engineer. He was an active member in the Kiwanis Club, Dorchester County Sales Tax Transportation Authority, was a Dorchester County Election Commission Poll Manager and was also a Dorchester County Councilman for 12 years.
Ack is survived by his three daughters, Francine Higgins and her husband Gene of Greenville, SC; Charleen Hammond and her husband Donald of Charleston, SC; and Suzie Hyde and her husband Jimmy of Huger, SC; 9 grandchildren, Kathy Kelly, Daniel and Xoey Kelly, Danielle Dunham, Chad & Melissa Hammond, Ray Dunham, Scott Hammond, James Thomas Hyde Jr.; three great-grandsons, A.J., Alex & Justin Mooney. Ack is also survived by his two brothers, Charles L. Ackerman and his wife Alexa of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and James Linwood Ackerman and his wife Sandra of Greenville, SC, and his two special friends, Ann London and her son John of Summerville.
Ack was an avid volunteer for civic and political projects and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of Stallsville United Methodist Church for 36 years and served in several positions within the church. Ack was an inspiring leader, loving father and grandfather, and a great friend to many. He will be dearly missed.
