James Robinson's putback with 1.5 seconds left lifted Goose Creek past Summerville, 48-47, Friday night at SHS in a non-region game. It wasn't a thing of beauty but it sure beats losing, Gators coach Brad Dobbels said.
"We didn't play great but one good thing is that we found a way to win," Dobbels said. "They got it done through the adversity and we hadn't been doing that this year."
The Gators had the ball with 15.7 seconds left after Summerville's J.D. Tucker missed the front of a one-and-one and got the ball into the frontcourt before calling a timeout with 9.5 seconds left.
Dobbels told Dantez Bennamon to go for the win and his big guys to come in behind for a second-chance bucket. Bennamon's driving layup came off the iron and Robinson cleaned it up to send the visitors into a frenzy and crushing Summerville's spirits.
"We didn't get the one rebound we needed and they got it," said Summerville coach Greg Elliott, whose team fell to 7-7. "... This could take some time to shake off."
It was Goose Creek 11th win of the season.
Summerville raced out to a 9-2 lead in the first period but Goose Creek (11-4) responded with a 21-6 run to lead 23-15 in the second period. The Green Wave charged back to tie at 30-30 early in the second half but the Gators surged back in front, leading 42-36 after three quarters.
"We got too relaxed," Dobbels said. "Instead of methodically building leads to 8, 10 or 12 points one possession at a time, we let teams get back into the game."
The Green Wave eventually overtook the Gators in the fourth quarter and grabbed its last lead on Tucker's layup with 50 seconds left in the game. The Wave had a chance to build it further after the Gators' Raemond Robinson missed on a 3-pointer with under 20 seconds left. But Tucker's free throw was off the mark to the left, setting up the frantic finish.
Raemond Robinson led the Gators with 16 points, while James Robinson added 12 and Bennamon 10.
Tucker had 13 for Summerville and Eric Flowers added nine points. Jarrell Rice had eight points before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.
Both teams begin region play Jan. 11. Goose Creek hosts Stratford in its Region 7-AAAA opener and Summerville travels to Fort Dorchester for its first Region 8-AAAA game.
In the girls game Friday, the Lady Gators won 65-40 behind 23 points from Aleighsa Welch and 13 more from N'Dea Bryant. Ashley Fields also had 10 points for GCHS, which improved to 13-2.
Shanolla Council had 13 to lead the Summerville girls.
