Ballers tryouts

The Lowcountry Ballers will hold tryouts for their boys’ and girls’ basketball teams on Jan. 28 at Pinewood Prep in Summerville. The tryouts are open for all girls grades 5-12 and all boys grades 5-11. Cost is $10 per player for all age groups. For more information, contact D.A. Tryout Schedule: 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. (ninth-grade girls); 11-1:30 p.m. (ninth-grade boys); 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (tenth-grade girls); 4 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. (girls and boys grades 7-8); and 6-8:30 p.m. (girls and boys grades 5-6.)

Old-timers game

The 2012 old-timers football game, played every spring at Goose Creek High School, is scheduled for March 10 at 6 p.m. Registration dates are Jan. 31 and Feb. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the GCHS cafeteria. As usual, the game will serve as a fundraiser for a worthwhile effort. Last season, the proceeds went to the MUSC Children’s Hospital. Fees to play are $35 and each player must be at least 20-years-old. Players from all over are eligible to participate, not just those from the Goose Creek area. Swamp Fox oyster roast

The Touchdown Club of Ashley Ridge Athletics is hosting an oyster roast and chili cook-off Feb. 18 from 6-10 p.m. at Miler Country Club. Tickets are on sale for $25 in advance and will be $30 at the door and include all you can eat oysters along with chili from the contest. A silent auction will be held; cash bar available. The event will raise money for much needed equipment for the football programs at Ashley Ridge High School. Parks Field baseball

Parks Field Baseball registration for ages 4-19 will be held on Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 in the concession stand from 9 a.m. until noon. Registration fee is $60 per player. Players’ birth certificate should be brought as proof of age. For more info, visit Parksbaseball.com or call 871-2576.

Little League Registration

Summerville Little League will have registration at the SLL baseball fields every Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and every Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon. Online registration is also available at www.summervillelittleleague.org. All registration ends Feb. 18.

Golf fundraiser

A fundraising golf tournament to help the Szala family of Goose Creek pay the medical bills for their son, Zach is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start on Jan. 28 at Legend Oaks golf club in Summerville. Eight-year-old Zach was playing in the woods at Wannamaker County Park on Nov. 23 when he was bitten twice by a rattlesnake. He has been in Medical University Hospital since. Entry for the four-man captain's choice golf tournament is $75 per player and includes lunch, door prizes and beverages. There also are closest-to-pin and long-drive contests. Hole sponsorship is $100. Payment must be made by Jan. 15. For information, contact Glenn Powell at 200-5426 or the Legend Oaks pro shop at 821-4077.

Athletic Hall of Fame

Nominations for the Summerville High School Athletic Hall of Fame are being accepted until March 1. Nomination forms may be picked up and returned at the SHS Athletic Office or at George Miler Country Club (Summerville Country Club).

Lacrosse coaches needed

The Charleston Youth Lacrosse Club, comprised mostly of players from Summerville and North Charleston, is in need of a girls’ coach and assistants. The team has been playing for nine years and expects 20 players for this season. Call Peter Collins at 343-7634 for more information.
