Keeper Ronnie Murray limited Dutch Fork to two goals to help Summerville earn a victory in the first round of the boys’ Class AAAA soccer playoffs.

Preps wrap: Soccer teams enter playoffs, golfers play for title




The Summerville soccer teams advanced in the state playoffs, but the Fort teams both fell to Spring Valley in the opening round.


The Summerville boys traveled to Dutch Fork and downed the Silver Foxes 5-2 to advance to a game Thursday at Wando. Green Wave senior Justin Barlotta scored three goals to lead the charge. Daniel Boweres and Michael Rutland also scored for Summerville.


The Wave improved its record to 15-3 while Dutch Fork fell to 12-11-1. Thursday’s game was played after press time. If Summerville won, it will face the winner of the West Ashley/Goose Creek game May 10.


The Fort boys stood toe-to-toe with the top 4-A team in the state Tuesday, but Spring Valley slipped one goal by the Pats for a 1-0 victory. The Fort fell to 11-5 on the year with the loss and was eliminated from the playoffs. Spring Valley improved to 22-0.


In the 4-A girls playoffs, Summerville breezed by Richland Northeast in the first round to earn a 7-0 victory. Cathryn Berry scored two goals while Karlie Kunkle, Lesley Sweat, Christy Fletcher, SaraBeth Perry and Katie Kreider also scored. Holly Lange andChelsie Mummert shared the shutout in goal.


Summerville improved to 18-4 on the year with a 5-0 shutout in the second-round over Stratford Wednesday. Cathryn Berry scored two goals in the first half to give the Wave momentum.


The Fort girls were eliminated in the first round with a 5-0 loss to Spring Valley. Hannah Chillag scored four of Spring Valley’s goals. The Fort ended the year with a 10-7 record while Spring Valley improved to 16-5.


Golf


The Summerville and Fort golf teams participated in the state golf championship tournament Monday and Tuesday at Furman University. Dutch Fork won the title with an 897 score. Fort Dorchester tied for 10th place in a 16-team field with a 957 total and Summerville placed 13th with a 987 total.


Fort coach Tom Wilson was happy with his team’s results.


“This was a much better finish than last year's squad, which placed 16th”, he said. “Jordan Griffith scored a total of 230 (77-78-75) which placed him 13th overall out of 96 golfers.”


Dutch Fork’s Wesley Bryan, with a 215 score, was the medalist. Berkeley’s Trey Dennis placed third with a 220 total. Tyler Ensley led the Wave with a 238 finish. Trailing for the Fort were Andrew Thomas (242), Johnathon Rushton (243) and Taylor Zoller (248). Trailing for Summerville were Michael Goodwin (249), Brannon Parnell (249) and Ben Sloan (254).
