Miler Country Club’s premier event of the fall is only a few days away.

The 2008 Cuthbert Cup invitational is scheduled for Oct. 25-26.

Pros and amateurs a like will tee off for the event, which benefits the Tommy Cuthbert Memorial Scholarship fund.

This marks the ninth year Miler has hosted the fall golf tournament to honor the Cuthbert family and give recognition to some of the area’s top senior golfers.

For the first six years, the tournament was held in honor of June Cuthbert, the tournament’s first honorary chairman.

After his death, his son Tommy served as honorary chairman. After Tommy passed away in 2006, Miler officials decided to hold the tournament in honor of both June and Tommy and surviving members of the Cuthbert family took over organization of the tournament.

The event had been exclusively for older golfers, but last year Open and Pro divisions were added. In hopes of making it more of a signature event, organizers also included an open bar, hors d’ourves and a cook out.

“What we are trying to do is have an individual-based tournament that everyone can enjoy,” Walter Cuthbert, Tommy’s son, said. “It’s like a Chick Miler, only during the opposite time of year. We are looking for several pros to participate this year, some from the PGA and others who play on smaller tours. I think its fun for some of the local amateurs like Mike Cobb or Austin Cody to get to participate in the same tournament with guys who play weekly for money. It kind of gives them a chance to see how they stack up against them.”

Sponsorships ranging from $100 to $3,000 are available and registration is still available. Invitations have already gone out, but Cuthbert says the tournament is really an invitational by name only.

“My dad always tried to get anyone who loved the game of golf to play,” he said. “The tournament is for a great cause so as long as there’s room we would love for a few more golfers to come out. However, we do want to keep it under 200 players so we can maintain a family atmosphere.”

The tournament features four divisions – Pro (blue tees), Open (blue tees), Senior (55 and over, white tees) and Statesman (70 and over, statesman tees). The tournament champion will, as always, come from the Statesman division.

This year’s field will include defending Cuthbert Cup Pro Champion Jedd McLuen, who won his division last year with a 138 total. Five-time Statesman Champion Jim Boyle will also defend his title.

As of 2007, proceeds from the tournament go to the Tommy Cuthbert Memorial Scholarship fund, which was created last year by The Dorchester Free School Board, a private non-profit foundation under Section 501 9C) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The scholarship is available to residents of Dorchester County who are seeking an undergraduate degree.

To register for the PGA sanctioned tournament, call Miler Country Club at 873-2210. If golfing isn’t your cup of tea, you can still help. Tax-deductible contributions can be made out to The Dorchester Free School Board and sent to: Miler Country Club, 400 Country Club Boulevard, Summerville, S.C. 29483.
