Fort Dorchester High School graduate Charles Drew Buehring is among a host of athletes who will be joining The Citadel cross country and track and field teams this year.
On Monday, Bulldog Head Coach Jody Huddleston announced the addition of 16 men and 10 women to the 2012-13 rosters for the teams. This year's recruits cover nine states with 13 being from South Carolina and five from the Lowcountry.
Over the past several seasons, Buehring was a staple for both the Fort Dorchester cross country team and the Patriot track team. At the 2012 4-A state track meet, he finished the 1600 in 4:15.22 to place second. He was also the top Lowcountry finisher at the state cross country championship meet last school year, placing ninth with a 16:03 finish. He placed seventh at that meet in 2010.
Buehring’s PR in the mile is 4:15 while his PR in the 5k is a 15:56. He has posted a 9:48 time in the 3200. Bulldog coaches are expecting the former Patriot to make an immediate impact on the cross country team and believe he has the potential to break The Citadel’s indoor and outdoor records for the mile.
Other athletes added to the men’s program and the high school they graduated from include Tevin Williams (Stratford), Jayce Almes (Wando), Neil Blake (Coastal Christian), George Trae Carson (Blythewood), Leo Grucella (Lancaster), Darius Johnson (Northwestern), Miles Keohane (Wando), Nicholas Prestigiacomo (Christian Brother Academy), Jonathan Reed (Cardinal O’Hara), Christian Sevidal (North Gwinnett), William Sloane (West Ashley) and Joseph Pinto (West Islip).
The men’s team has one transfer student, Gustavo Vazquez-Milan from Kansas State University.
"I am very excited about this year's freshman class,” Huddleston said. “Coach (Kris) Kut has done an excellent job recruiting. We expect several of this year's freshmen to make an immediate impact most notably in the hurdles. Graduate student Gus Vazquez-Milan and freshman Tevin Williams will likely claim spots on the 4x400. Distance runners Drew Buehring and Miles Keohane could be Top-5 runners for the Bulldogs this fall."
Joining the Lady Bulldog teams are Jennifer Burch (Socastee), Caillian Colquitt (Southside Christian), Jessica Dewitte (Eisenhower), Marissa Hutton (Chapin), Kristen Kessinger (White Oak), Madison Mayleben (Skyline), Brittany McKinney (Maroa-Forsyth), Virginia Moriah Morton (Fletcher), Jaqueline Thompson (Harrison) and Danielle Williams (Camden County).
"Danielle Williams and Brittany McKinney will compete in several events and should claim some freshman and perhaps a school records," Huddleston said. "Jaqueline Thompson and Madison Mayleben should be Top-5 runners in cross country and Jessica Dewitte and Caillian Colquitt will add a great deal of depth for this year's squad. "
The Bulldog's will open the season on Aug. 31 in Columbia at the Gamecock Invitational. For more information on Bulldog cross country or track and field, visit Twitter @CitadelSports, Facebook or the official website of The Citadel Athletics, www.citadelsports.com.
