Goose Creek and Summerville high schools engaged in an epic shootout in 2010.
What does 2011 have in store?
The Green Wave is 2-0, with wins over Conway and Berkeley, while Goose Creek is 1-1 after its loss to Florida power University School on Saturday.
“Summerville is always well-coached and they’re always bigger than what their roster says,” Gators coach Chuck Reedy said. “They play very hard the whole game.”
And last year, that went into three overtimes as then-No. 3 Goose Creek came away with a 64-57 victory over No. 6 Summerville at John Fulmer Field. The teams combined for over 1,200 yards of total offense in front of an overflow crowd and the game lived up to its billing all the way to the end. The Green Wave came back from a 42-21 deficit to force the extra stanzas.
This year’s matchup is in Summerville, where Goose Creek last won in 2004.
“We’ve got to get back on track toward our goals,” Reedy said. “We’ve got to put University behind us. It was fun and we competed, and came up short. We’re not going to spend any more time on it.”
Last year’s win snapped a four-game losing streak in the series and gave the Gators only their sixth win in 43 meetings against Summerville.
Several key players in last year’s game are back this season, mostly for Goose Creek. Summerville quarterback Dalton Saunders threw for 297 yards. He’s a three-year starter.
Goose Creek fullback Virgil Smalls had 73 rushing yards and scored five times.
Quarterback Jaquan Marsh was 8 of 11 for 172 yards and two scores. Tramel Terry caught five passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.
Summerville is coming off a 13-0 win over Berkeley. It was another strong defensive effort for the Wave, which scored all of its points in the second half.
In Week 1, Summerville knocked off Conway 34-19 behind the running of Nigel Frierson (167 yards) and the defense’s five turnovers.
“It’s going to be another tough football game for our team and we’ve got to be ready,” Reedy said. “Summerville is always ready for us.”
