Woodland lost a hard-fought battle to the Hawks of Hanahan Friday.
The Wolverines (3-2) matched up well with the Hawks (3-2), but fell a drive short of a win as Hanahan slipped by 34-30. It was all Woodland in the opening quarter as the team jumped out to a 16-0 lead behind the running of Nagui Wright and the arm of Robert Smith.
On Woodland’s first possession, Smith hit Dondrell Folk with a 22-yard strike to open the scoring. Wright followed by running in the two-point conversion attempt.
The Wolverine defense forced the Hawks to punt on their first possession and Woodland scored again after two completions, one to Marquise Carson for 35 yards and another to Dekendal Carn for 10 to take the ball to the 3-yard line. Wright carried the ball into the end zone from there and Smith added the conversion with a pass to Damian Alston.
Hanahan came storming back and scored its second touchdown with two seconds on the clock to take a 16-13 lead into the half.
It was back and forth in the second half. Hanahan went up 20-16 and then Woodland gained a 22-20 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Woodland fumbled early in the final stanza and the Hawks took advantage of the turnover with an 84-yard touchdown pass. With the two-point conversion, the Hawks went up28-22. Hanahan scored again to seemingly put the game out of reach, but the Wolverines came back to cut the lead to 34-28 when Smith hit Gabriel Brown on a 30-yard TD pass with six minutes remaining.
The Wolverines’ ensuing on-side kick didn’t work, but Woodland did get one more chance to score in the final two minutes. However, they were unable to convert on a fourth-and-12 and Hanahan then ran out the clock.
Smith was 20-for-35 passing for 216 yards and two touchdowns. Carson had eight catches for 101 yards. Hanahan QB Bryce Hines threw for four touchdown passes and scored Hanahan’s other TD on a 1-yard run.
Woodland opens region play tonight at Burke.
