The team of freshmen and sophomores turned in an impressive performance to down Garrett Tech 32-6 and pick up its first win in its new stadium. Tonight, the Swamp Foxes (2-4, 2-0 in Region 6-AA) host a rematch with Cane Bay (0-6, 0-2), which the Ridge defeated 14-12 on the road Sept. 26.
“We will have to play our best game yet in order to beat them,” Ashley Ridge coach Julian “Doc” Davis said. “We will have to play better than we did last time because there was some luck involved last time. Cane Bay has more team speed than we do and more depth so it will be tough.”
There were several turnovers in he first meeting between the Lowcountry’s two newest high schools. The Ridge had a strong first half and scored after an interception to take an early lead.
The Cobras turned in the bester offensive performance of the second half, but the Foxes made two defensive stands inside the 10-yard line and added a score to earn the victory. Last Friday, the Cobras managed two scores on a very good Bishop England team so the Ridge defense will need a solid performance tonight in order to contain the snakes. Still, the Foxes should have momentum after the win over Garrett.
“We certainly played better last week than we had the previous weeks,” Davis said. “For us to beat a team with juniors and seniors is big, however, Garrett had some starters who weren’t able to play Friday. We are making strides, but we still have a ways to go.”
Ashley Ridge QB Cameron Cox and receiver Seamus McKinney have proven to be a dangerous passing tandem. The two definitely had an impact in the first Cane Bay game. Against Garrett, the Foxes showed signs of an improving running attack.
“We were able to run the ball some last week, which is something we haven’t done particularly well,” Davis said. “I think the offensive line is making progress and Otis Neals had a good game.”
Neals and Cox both had a rushing touchdown against Garrett. McKinney had two TDs, one on a run and another on a pass.
