Some local swimmers made it to the podium during the South Carolina High School League’s state swim meets held Oct. 12.

Summerville placed 10th in the meet with a 144-point total. Mauldin won the meet with a 348.5 total. Fort Dorchester placed 19 with a 44.5 total.

In the boys’ meet, Stratford’s Bjoern Hornikel placed second in the 50 Free with a 21.59 time and second in the 100 Free with a 46.91 finish. Nation Ford won the boys’ meet with 411 points. Stratford and Fort Dorchester tied for 12th place after they each earned 99 points. Summerville placed 19th with 35 points and Goose Creek placed 20th with 32.

An Ashley Ridge swimmer placed during the Class AAA-AA-A state championships at Clemson. Elijah Bohon placed fourth in the 200 IM with a 2:03.91 time and fifth in the 100 Free with a 49.56 time.

In Clemson, J.L. Mann won the girls’ meet with a 460-point total. Ashley Ridge placed 17th with 83 points. Riverside won the boys’ state championship with 550 points. The Ashley Ridge boys placed 16th with 83 points.

Roger Lee got it right in September

The Ashley Ridge swim team is young, but it already has its first win. The Swamp Fox swim team opened the year right by earning a win over Pinewood Sept. 9.

Enough of Pinewood aleady!!!

If Pinewood wants all the media coverage, let them swim in the big pool with the "sharks" not the fish tank with the "guppies"!

another time comparison
Friday, October 17, 2008 2:52 PM

In the article about Pinewood, it stated the winning time of the boys 500 free was 5:20...the winning time in the same event at the 4A meet was 4:33. 5:20 would have gotten 17th at the 4A meet.

Let's Compare Times
Friday, October 17, 2008 8:25 AM

Is Mr. Baechtle a Pinewood employee? He's obviously covering nothing but Pinewood sports. There's not alot to compare between articles, but there are three comparison times that stick out. In the Class AAAA Championships a Summerville swimmer placed 3rd in the 200 Free with a time of 1:43.12 Baechtle fawns over a Pinewood swimmer with a time of 2:14.60 in the same event. A Stratford swimmer comes in 2nd in the 50 free with a time of 21:59. Pinewood's best, 25:08. That same Stratford swimmer comes in 2nd with a time of 46:91 in the 100 Free. Pinewood boasts a swimmer "kickin'Butt" with a time of 58:44. It's obvious that Pinewood lives in their own little world with Mr. Baechtle charged with informing the "less fortunate" of all their antics. I have nothing against the Pinewood swimmers getting a well-deserved pat-on-the-back, but do it in the Pinewood school paper, not the Journal Scene. Class AAAA swimmers deserve alot better coverage for all their hard work.

State meet
Thursday, October 16, 2008 4:17 PM

To add to my other comment..it's especially annoying when you make a point of talking about each Pinewood swimmer that swam at their state meet. Nothing against Pinewood, but there is an obvious discrepancy in the way the schools are covered. We public school parents would like our kids to be recognized, too. It was nice earlier this year when you profiled the Ashley Ridge, Summerville, and Pinewood swimteams. Unfortunately, you forgot Fort D. And Dillon L-great job at State!!!

state meet

Those may have been the only swimmers that made it to the podium, but they were NOT the only local swimmers to place and score points for their teams as well as others who had personal bests! How about Vince Leonguererro, Steven Bates, Brandon and Alecia Rattigan, Marina Davis, Cherokee Grooms, Kyle Zoller, Jennifer Schmidt, Caitlin Hunt, Colleen Closson, Rachel Martin, Ryan Shope, Steven Brinson, and others. I am so SORRY if I left anybody out for FDHS.. What about Brianne Jones, Chris Graham, Michael Massey and others for SHS? (Again, I apologize for those I left out). What about Rachel Vandermeyden and Jeremiah Bohon from ARHS? Focus more on listing the individual local kids and less on the overall meet results. Let's give these other kids some credit. They made not have made the podium, but they deserve recognition. Wait til some of them get a little older...they'll be on those podiums! Congratulations to ALL of you who went to Clemson and Rock Hill and made Dorchester District 2 proud!!!
