The Summerville Storm youth cross country team had a good outing at The Citadel Invitational Sept. 27.
Former Storm runner Sydney Hazel won the varsity girls’ division of the race with a time of 19:35.6.
Despite having to run distances much longer than they are used to, some of the young Storm runners managed to better high school runners in the JV division.
The club’s standout girls’ finisher was Renee Bourgeo, who placed 34th out of 155 runners in the division with a time of 24:47. Following were Anna Gluhosky (58th place), Rachel Thurmes (60th), Ruth Hawley (61st), Abby Bozarth (62nd), Michelle Lussier (66th), Madison Gaines (89th), Anna Grace Crosby (91st), Emily Shuler (95th), Breanna Lands (96th), Rachel Mitchell (97th), Savannah Taylor, Amanda Ellenburg, Jordan Moore, Abigail Czech, Makaylee Blizzard and one of the club’s youngest runners – 7-year-old Elizabeth Hamilton.
The standout boys’ finisher was Jackson Ellenburg, who finished 58th out of 207 runners in The 9-year-old ran the 5k in a time of 21:05. Trailing were Storm runners Haden Lima, Brandon Turske, Jackson Inabinett, Jack Hazel and 7-year-old Zachary Mathis.
Next up for he club is the Mt. Pleasant meet, where the runners will return to their standard distances. The Storm will host its home meet at 9 a.m. Oct. 25 at Newington Elementary School.
