Two local billiards teams recently earned a bid to the City Cup tournament with their performance in TriCup Championship events.
The 8Ball Alkies out of Summerville’s Hurricane Alley earned a bid during the APA Pool League qualifying tournament held at North Park Grill and Shady Lady Sept. 27-28.
The Purple Shooters team out of Jack’s Place qualified for the City Cup during a TriCup tournament held Sept.13-14 at Weekends Pub.
This year 88 teams from the Southeastern part of the state competed for approximately $15,000 in cash and prizes and a seed in this summer’s City Cup, which is a qualifying tournament for nationals.
City Cup teams will play for approximately $100,000 in cash and prizes and the right to advance to APA 8-Ball and 9-Ball National Team Championships Aug. 15-23 at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Aug. There, $500,000 will be up for grabs.
More than 4,000 players compete in the Southeastern S.C. division of the APA, which covers the Greater Charleston area, Hilton Head, Beaufort, Walterboro, Hampton, Santee, and Orangeburg. Area APA officials sponsor three national-qualifying tournaments per year.
